Wilfrid Laurier announces next wave of recruits

WATERLOO, Ont. (May 23, 2012) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks football team announced their second wave of recruits on Tuesday with two athletes from the Kitchener-Waterloo region highlighting the list.

Garrett Burke from Cameron Heights Collegiate and Kyle Swanson from Jacob Hespeler Secondary are among the second group of athletes to commit which includes over 33 incoming players.

Burke is a 6-2, 185 lbs defensive back who starred for the Golden Gaels and helped the team to a 5-3 record in 2011. Swanson is a 6-0, 225 lbs linebacker who was a key member of the Jacob Hespeler Hawks that finished first in the Waterloo Country regular season with an 8-1 record but lost the championship game to Sir John A. MacDonald. He joins teammate and fellow linebacker Zach Hoare who was announced as a recruit in December.

“We are excited to have the commitment from two more local athletes,” commented Laurier head coach Gary Jeffries. “Kyle comes from a great program and has shown he can be an excellent linebacker. As for Garrett, he possesses nice size and has been taught by one of the tri-cities very best in Ron Bell.”

Laurier’s second group of recruits features a number of players on the defensive side of the ball as the Golden Hawks have received commitments from an additional eight defensive backs, three linebackers and four defensive linemen. On the offensive side of the ball, the team has received commitments from five offensive lineman, eight receivers, two running backs and a kicker.

“The commitment of these additional 33 athletes brings this years total to 54, the largest recruiting class in our history,” continued Jeffries. “They are a very talented group and we are looking forward to seeing them perform in training camp in August.”
