Winnipeg Rifles to roast David Black (CJFL)

The Winnipeg Rifles have announced that Blue Bomber Hall of Famer, David Black, will be the β€œvictim” at their annual fundraising dinner this year.

The 2011 Roast takes place at Canad Inns Polo Park on Thursday April 28th. The 9th annual event, to be refereed once again this year by Global Winnipeg’s Joe Pascucci, promises to be even larger than in previous years where legends such as Lyle Bauer, Chris Walby, Gord Steeves, Bob Sokalski and last year’s prey, Wade Miller, have all taken shots for the team.

Having played in the CJFL with the Oshawa Hawkeyes, Dave understands the importance of Junior Football Programs like the Winnipeg Rifles and did not hesitate to lend his support for the dinner.

2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the Rifles and the return of Junior Football to Winnipeg. Rifles Club President Todd Wilson states β€œthe annual Roast is the club’s single largest fundraiser and has become as popular as the stories have become exaggerated”.

Professionally, Black touts a twelve year career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers highlighted by two Grey Cup wins in 1988 and 1990. Dave was also a CFL all-star in 1993 and a CFL Eastern all star in 1994. In 2005, Black was inducted into the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Hall of Fame. Dave continues to reside in Winnipeg and is currently coaching with the Oak Park Raiders in the WHSFL and is currently the co-chair of the Never Alone Foundation.

The Winnipeg Rifles Junior Football Club is one of twenty teams in the Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL). The CJFL was founded in 1883 and is Canada’s oldest national amateur football league.
