WOLFE: Does 3 down football still make sense for the CFL?

It seems that the CFL has been on life support for decades. Are today’s problems more significant than those they have overcome year after year? Having decided or being forced to shut down for the entire 2020 season has created financial issues weightier than previously experienced.Β

To be sure, the CFL, unlike most other professional leagues, is almost entirely dependent on the gate and additional game-day revenues. The CFL teams lost millions of dollars; however, they would have been more significant if they played games in empty stadiums.Β 

CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie, during his customary Grey Cup week β€œstate of the union” address, did not advance anything exciting nor reassuring. From my perspective, neither joining with Genius Sports nor utilizing a revenue-sharing system answer the real and serious issues faced by the CFL.Β
