WR/DB Ihanza looking for new start with SMU

Huskies bring in out-of-province commit.

Lerenzo Ihanza, a wide receiver transfer from the University of Manitoba, has already experienced life out west, but now the Toronto-born athlete is ready to take the east coast, and the Saint Mary’s University Huskies, by storm.

“I needed a fresh start somewhere to ball out again,” he said. “I wanted to help build a legacy here at SMU instead of hopping on a bandwagon. I want to (be) the focal point of this program.”

Ihanza, who also plays as a defensive back, is more than ready to start working under his new coaches. “I love (Head Coach) Colzie. He is a great dude. Coach Tufford has been a big help to me already,” he said. “I have a lot of respect for what they are building here.”

The 6’2, 200lbs psychology major spent time playing with the Canada Prep Raiders, the Brampton Bulldogs (OVFL) and the Westshore Rebels (BCFC). He was an OFC special teams player of the year, a Cullen Cup champion and a high school MVP.

Now, he is ready to bring his mentality to the Huskies. He said, “(I’m) just going to bring my winning ways to SMU and help a program rebuild.”
