X-Men pound Mounties in AUS opener

SACKVILLE – The Mount Allison Mounties had a rough first half and were unable to recover, dropping their season opener 51-5 to the St. Francis Xavier X-Men. On a great evening for football, the Mounties played a night game to open the season for the first time in the program’s history. More than 2,219 fans eagerly cheered on the start of the new AUS football season.

The first quarter started tentatively with each team recording field goals. StFX opened the scoring with Jeremy Ford kicking a 36-yard field goal at 10:33 and a 22-yard field goal at 5:23 of the first quarter. The Mounties’ Alec Curtis responded with a 30-yard field goal of his own with 53 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
StFX busted the game wide open in the second quarter, outscoring Mount Allison 35-2. Damon Williams had two scores for the X-Men, one coming on a 55-yard reception and the second coming off a blocked punt which he recovered and ran 15 yards for the major.

The second half saw very little scoring, with StFX adding a touchdown in the third quarter and Jeremy Ford’s third field goal of the night during the fourth quarter to bring the score to 51-5. X-Men quarterback Clay Masikewich threw for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Ashton Dickson led the attack on the ground, rushing for 154 yards and one touchdown.

For the Mounties, fourth-year quarterback Jake Hotchkiss was 7 of 18 for 60 yards. Freshman Brandon Leyh was 8-12 for 81 yards in relief. Freshman tailback Jordan Botel led the ground attack for the Mounties with 55 yards on 15 carries.Β Β Defensively, fifth-year linebacker Justin Richard led the Mounties with 9.5 tackles.Β Β Firth-year Mountie Ryan Downe recorded his first sack of the season, moving him within four sacks of the AUS career sack record of 21.

The Mounties now travel to Montreal to play the McGill Redmen on Friday, September 14th at 7PM.Β Β McGill has started the RSEQ season at 0-2, losing to both Laval and Sherbrooke. The Mounties return home to once again host StFX on Saturday, September 22nd for Homecoming.
