York commit ‘very proud’ to be part of team

York adds an Ontario commit to their 2020 class.

Theo Brown, a defensive lineman from Bayridge Secondary School, is heading to Toronto after signing with the York Lions.

“I chose York because I feel as though they have a very good foundation to be a great football team. The coaching staff has been amazing throughout the recruiting process,” he said.

“I love the campus, the city and all of the people I have met from the team and the support system around the team. York is on its way to being a contending football team, and I am very proud to be a part of that!”

Brown added that York’s coaching staff is amazing. He said he talked a lot with coach Ritchie and coach Okpro throughout the process, both of whom played a very big role in his decision.

“Head Coach Craney is an amazing coach and from the time I have spent with him, I can tell that he is a great leader and coach for the Lions,” Brown added. “I can’t wait to play for all three of these amazing coaches.”

Interested in continuing education, the 6’1, 270lbs defensive tackle said that the school’s academic support also really impressed him. He said it ultimately made him lean towards York.

Hailing from Kingston, Ontario, Brown spent two years with the Frontenac Falcons (KASSAA) and two with the Bayrdige Blazers (KASSAA). In grade 10, he won a KASSAA championship with the Falcons. He was also ‘athlete of the year’ and ‘lineman of the year’ in his grade 12 season with the Blazers.

“I would like to thank everyone who has helped me get to this point, from my family, my friends, my coaches, my teacher and everyone else in the community who has helped me along the way,” he said.

“I wouldn’t have been able to do it with out all of them. I would also like to that my Head coach at Bayridge, Derek Mcphail, for taking me in with open arms when I came from Frontenac and taking me under his wing and guiding me through my senior seasons!”
