Lions add GTA commit to their Class of 2018.
Even before he put pen to paper, the York Lions welcomed Brady Rucker, a cornerback from St. Johnās College, onto their team with open arms and warm intentions.
āI chose to come to York because I felt like I was joining a family, not just a roster,ā Rucker said. āAll the guys from the first visit were extremely welcoming and they made me feel like I was part of the team already.ā
A ten-year veteran of the sport, Rucker spent his life in Brantford, Ontario. His family, however, all hail from South Carolina. āI just took an early love to the sport growing up in a southern familyā¦so, Iāve pretty much been bred into this sport,ā Rucker said.
Now the 6ā2, 195lbs athlete will be heading into the metropolis that is Toronto, drawn to York by the allure of championships and academics.
For Rucker, the coaches played a huge part in his decision to become a Lion. āAll the coaches truly know what it takes to rebuild the program and win the (Yates) Cup down the road,ā he said. āThat is what I loved from the beginning, along with (the fact) that they are all just great people who have a love for the sport of football much like my love and passion towards it.ā
Interested in psychology, Rucker said that in terms of academics, the mandatory study hall was very promising. āThey showed me that I can not only succeed as a football player, but as a student at York (as well),ā he added.
In his career, Rucker has played with the Brantford Bisons (OFL), the St. Johnās College Green Eagles (Brant County Secondary School Athletic Association) and Team Ontario. In 2015, he captured a city championship.
With one title under his belt, Rucker is looking towards the OUAās top prize, the Yates Cup. He said that, āOverall, we (the coaches and I), have the same goal and thatās to bring the Yates back to Toronto and we were aware of our common interest immediately!ā
