York brings in southern Ontario commit to their Class of 2018.
John Diberardo, an offensive lineman from St. Jean de Brébeuf Catholic High School, will be staying in his hometown province after sighing with the York Lions.
“York University is close to home, and it’s a school that really opened my eyes to the academic assistance that I would receive when I attend,” Diberardo said, who is from Hamilton, Ontario. “Also, they pay attention to their players and want them to succeed on and off the field.”
It’s the Lions’ coaches who are leading the charge of this success-first mentality. Diberardo said the coaches are a great group of people who interact with the team and pays attention to their student athletes. “(It’s) almost like a big family,” he added.
Diberardo decided to return for a victory lap after graduating in 2017. While he played for the St. Thomas More Knights (Hamilton Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association) in 2016, he elected to transfer to the St. Jean de Brébeuf Braves (HWCAA). During his time with the Knights, he won two OFSAA championships.
“I’ve been on teams that have won championships, such as the Hamilton Hurricanes (OFC), the Varsity Tiger-Cats (OPFL), the St. Thomas More Knights, who are now three-time OFSAA winners and ranked number one in Canada. Very proud to say I was there two of those championships,” he said.
Standing at 6’2, 305lbs, the offensive guard and centre is interested in taking Criminology.
