Mount Douglas Rams lineman Jake Ounsted is focused on something other than football.

Since he began playing the game in 2010, Jake has suited up for three teams and has been honoured with several awards.

In 2011, the two-way lineman was named Most Improved Player with the Peninsula Wildcats of the Greater Victoria Minor Football Association (GVMFA). In both 2012 and 2013, he was named Wildcats Lineman MVP as well as Defensive MVP. He won a second Defensive MVP award in 2014 with the GVMFA’s Victoria Renegades.

He currently plays for the junior varsity Mount Douglas Rams of the British Columbia High School Football Association (BCHSFA).

Throughout all his gridiron experiences, one thing stood out as the highlight – team bonding.

β€œYou spend so much time with your coaches and players, and we are very close,” adds Jake.

Jake’s training regimen is geared towards making him stronger and faster.

β€œDuring football season we train five days a week,” says Jake who can leg press 870 pounds 30 times. “In the offseason, I do weights, cardio, and speed/agility training.”

β€œI am be more careful about what I eat, which is tough.”

Jake has several people who have been main influences on and off the field.

β€œMy parents are the most influential people in my life,” says Jake. Β “There are many people that influence me in football, from JJ Watt for his intensity to Russell Wilson for his won’t quit attitude and all of my coaches who teach me to be a better player and person.”

Still a freshman in high school, the lineman isn’t surprised by the lack of recruiting or significant interest from any post-secondary institutions. Showing that his focus is broader than just the game, he wants to become a chartered accountant after he’s gone as far as he can with football.

β€œAs a freshman junior varsity player I am focused on my school work,” says Jake, who enjoys math. Β “I am open to where my future statement.”
