OVFL & OFC Week 9 Varsity Recap: Regular season concludes, Myers Riders remain perfect

The regular season concluded this past weekend in the Varsity Divisions of both the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) and the Ontario Football Conference (OFC).

Ottawa Myers Riders have ended the regular season undefeated with a perfect 8-0 record after winning their game this past weekend.  Other Week 9 winners in the OVFL include Cornwall Wildcats, Metro Toronto Wildcats, Mississauga Warriors, Cambridge Lions, Cumberland Panthers, Niagara Spears, London Jr Mustangs and Essex Ravens.

This upcoming Saturday (July 26^th), the following playoff games will take place in the OVFL:

Metro Toronto Wildcats versus Kingston Grenadiers @ 12:00PM (TBA)
Scarborough Thunder versus Cumberland Panthers @ 12:00PM (Birchmount Stadium)
Mississauga Warriors versus SSM Sabrecats @ 7:00PM (Loyola Catholic Secondary School)
Cambridge Lions versus London Jr Mustangs @ 8:00 PM (Jacob Hespeler Field)

In the Ontario Football Conference (OFC), Sudbury Gladiators, Burlington Stampeders and Guelph Gryphons all won their final games of the regular season.

Here are results for WEEK 9 OVFL and OVC Varsity Divisions

ONTARIO VARSITY FOOTBALL LEAGUE (OVFL):

CORNWALL WILDCATS 21, SCARBOROUGH THUNDER 15:

At Mary Ward, Oden Robertson scored two touchdowns (including the winning score) and rushed for 72 yards on 18 carries as the Cornwall Wildcats needed overtime to tame the Scarborough Thunder 21-15.

Jeremy Pike added a 25 yard touchdown reception and amassed 70 yards on two receptions.  Alex Douglas added two PAT’s.

On defense, John Nobert registered 10 solo and two assisted tackles while Michael Cogan had 10 solo tackles and an assisted tackle.  Reeve Nicholson caught an interception as well as added three solo and two assisted tackles while Cale Beaulieu had a fumble recovery for the Wildcats.

As for the Thunder, Shomari Murdock-Reid tallied both majors and amassed 62 yards on three receptions.  Daynar Facey was successful on two conversion attempts.

Dylan Laird recorded three assisted sacks as well as registered two solo and 11 assisted tackles to lead the Thunder defense.

METRO TORONTO WILDCATS 17, KINGSTON GRENADIERS 13:

At Esther Shriner Stadium, the Metro Toronto Wildcats got by the Kingston Grenadiers 17-13.

For the Grenadiers, Jeremy Pendergast tallied a major and racked up 76 yards on eight receptions.  Dylan Fisher completed 21 passes in 41 attempts for 181 yards and two passing touchdowns.  Michael Bashall added two field goals (22 and 13 yards) and two PAT’s.

MISSISSAUGA WARRIORS 42, ETOBICOKE EAGLES 16:

At Father Henry Carr Catholic Secondary School, Nate Hobbs completed eight passes in 10 attempts for 234 passing yards and five touchdowns as the Mississauga Warriors cruised to a 42-16 win over the Etobicoke Eagles.

Joshua Congdon scored two touchdowns and racked up 66 yards on three receptions for the Warriors. Kadeem Hemmings had a 78 yard touchdown reception.  Dante Brown was successful on six conversion attempts in the victory.

As for the Eagles, Brendan O’Leary-Orange tallied a major and amassed 229 yards on eight receptions. Pivot Bryan Smith completed 13 passes in 32 attempts for 306 yards and two touchdowns.  Gage Leaver led the defense as he recorded a solo and an assisted tackle.  He also registered 11 solo and an assisted tackle in the loss.

 

 

CAMBRIDGE LIONS 33, SSM SABRECATS 32:

At Superior Heights High School, James Roberts completed 41 passes in 54 attempts for 410 yards and two passing touchdowns as the Cambridge Lions edged the SSM Sabrecats 33-32.

Kaden Jespersen tallied a major and had 65 yards on six receptions for the Lions.  Keiran Burnham added three field goals and two PAT’s in the win.

On defense, Devin Keeling recorded a solo sack as well as registered three solo and nine assisted tackles.

As for the Sabrecats, Nathan Elgie completed 16 passes in 24 attempts for 195 yards. David Toppan had 122 yards on five receptions while Jason Thibodeau rushed for 39 yards on 12 carries.

Jeff Horbatuk registered eight solo tackles and four assisted tackles while Brett Johnston had eight solo tackles and three assisted tackles for the Sabrecats.  Lau Frecha added six solo and two assisted tackles in the loss.

CUMBERLAND PANTHERS 42, YORK SIMCOE BUCS 7:

At Millennium Park, Darius Beckford scored three touchdowns and had 99 yards on four receptions as the Cumberland Panthers crushed the York Simcoe Bucs 42-7.

Brandon Smith tallied two major and racked up 66 yards on three receptions.  Cedric Ky also scored a touchdown and rushed for 37 yards on two carries for the Panthers.  Zacharie Charron returned a punt for a 30 yard touchdown.

Justin Poitras completed seven passes in 17 attempts for 200 yards and three passing touchdowns in the win.

As for the Bucs, Luke Griese scored a touchdown as well as registered two solo and four assisted tackles.  Mitchell LaMantia recorded an assisted sack as well as added six solo and five assisted tackles.  Marc Liegghio was successful on a conversion attempt in the loss.

OTTAWA MYERS RIDERS 35, AJAX-PICKERING DOLPHINS 14:

At Kinsmen Park, Keenan Tanti tallied a major and rushed for 53 yards on seven carries as the Ottawa Myers Riders earned a 35-14 victory over the Ajax-Pickering Dolphins.

Matthew Duffy completed nine passes in 24 attempts for 166 yards and three passing touchdowns for the Myers Riders.  Connor Ayre was successful on five conversion attempts.

Patrick Pankow led the Myers Riders defense as he caught two interceptions and registered two tackles.

Jordan Grimes rushed for 74 yards on 10 carries for the Dolphins.  Alonzo Addae added two PAT’s.

NIAGARA SPEARS 11, HALTON COWBOYS 7:

LONDON JR MUSTANGS 50, HAMILTON IRONMEN 7:

At McMaster Ron Joyce Stadium, Danny Mundt (78 yards on five carries) and Cole Kussman (56 yards on eight carries) each scored a touchdown as the London Jr Mustangs thumped the Hamilton Ironmen 50-7.

Mason Kett caught an interception and ran it into the end zone for a 27 yard touchdown as well as recorded two solo sacks.  He also registered two solo and five assisted sacks for the Mustangs.

Ben Kelly added two field goals (26 and 23 yards) and was successful on six conversion attempts in the victory.
