2025 CFC50 High School Rankings WEEK 11: Dynasties fall and droughts end

TOP HEADLINES

  • After 30 years of knocking on the door, the Holy Cross Crusaders can call themselves the best high school football team in Saskatchewan again. It took an all-out performance from every player and coach on the sideline to secure their 21-16 victory over Miller, who made a late mad dash for the finish line after trailing 21-3 that included an onside kick recovery that must’ve produced at least a moment of “Not again!” to creep in. But the moment didn’t last long as the Crusaders held their composure down the stretch, and will now go down in the history books as the team that was finally able to pen the perfect fairytale ending after suffering ten losses in the provincial finals dating back to their last triumph in 1995. It caps off a stellar undefeated campaign for Holy Cross that saw them outscore their opponents 334-60, which included a stretch of four straight shutouts, and their lone tie on the record came in their season opener non-league game when they hosted Notre Dame from Calgary, who are still undefeated in Alberta and have a real shot at going the distance this year. On a grander scale, it’s the continuation of a resurgence for football in Saskatoon after watching teams from Regina lift the trophy 13 times in a row between 2010-2023, and this is now the first time since 1997/1998 that teams from Saskatoon won the 6A title back-to-back.

  • It took ten years and a lot of heartbreak along the way, but the Oak Park Raiders are once again the kings of Manitoba football for the first time since 2014. They knew what they were up against coming into their rematch against the back-to-back defending champions Dakota, and they showed that they had what it takes during the regular season, but they still had to prove it to themselves that when it mattered most they could get the job done on a snowy field in November. This game unfolded like a Hollywood blockbuster with the Raiders fighting back from a 17-10 deficit heading into the fourth quarter, and two clutch special teams plays turned out to be the difference makers with a kickoff sailing over the head of the returner forcing Dakota into bad field position that eventually led to a safety, and then a 30 yard field goal in the final minutes to give Oak Park a two score lead. Which turned out to be crucial because the Lancers fought till their last breath recovering a fumble with 20 seconds left at the Raiders’ 20 yard line, but instead of having the chance to kick a game winning field goal, they were forced to launch a prayer into the end zone with zeroes on the clock that fell short much to the delight of everyone wearing blue at Princess Auto Stadium. This is the seventh provincial banner in Oak Park’s storied history, and you couldn’t have scripted a more dramatic ending in a game that will go down as one of the greatest championship battles the province has ever seen.

  • New Brunswick belongs to Riverview once again after a dominant 21-3 performance against Saint John in the provincial finals. A lot of people get shy when the word dynasty starts getting thrown around, but we are ready to use that word in the same sentence as the Riverview Royals after winning their third provincial banner in four straight trips to the finals. We struggled to get a read on the province all year long, so of course it was the one program we never had ranked that would end up getting the last laugh, and in hindsight it was a mistake on our end to not give the Royals the respect they rightly deserved. It’s been a golden era for Riverview who prior to the pandemic were always the bridesmaid and never the bride after losing in their first eight appearances at the big dance, but that’s now ancient history with everyone else in the province dreaming of replicating the type of run they Royals have been on in the last four years.
  • There was a ton of hardware handed out across Ontario this past week, and it’s been a long time since Bishop Ryan have been able to partake in the celebrations. But the 44 year drought is officially over in Upper Stoney Creek with the Celtics hanging on for a gutsy 10-9 victory over Bishop Tonnos, who were in search of their fourth straight Hamilton Catholic championship. It’s been a magical season at Bishop Ryan, but the ride is far from over with their eyes now set on writing some more history at the OFSAA Bowl Festival.

  • Which leads nicely into our next order of business. We knew Assumption had a great squad heading into the season, but we don’t know if there were many people outside that locker room who thought they could knock off the mighty Longhorns from Corpus Christi. Well, the doubters have been proven wrong for the second time this year with the Crusaders defeating Corpus Christi 17-10 to bring home their first Halton catholic banner since 2014. Luckily for the Longhorns, the road doesn’t end here with at least one more chance to redeem themselves in the GHAC semifinals where they will take on Bishop Ryan. On the other side, Assumption are now preparing to faceoff against Nelson, who cruised past Georgetown in the Halton public finals with a 35-14 victory to reclaim their spot on top of the HSSAA mountain. OFSAA have also announced the bowl matchups for this year with the winners from GHAC lined up to take on the winners from WOSSAA, which will be determined this week when Catholic Central take on St. Andre Bessette in the TVRA Tier I finals.
  • One of the surprising, but very welcomed announcements from the OFSAA bowl schedule was that for the first time ever NOSSA will be getting two bids, which means that Confederation live to see another day after bowing out to Korah in a hard fought 55-35 NOSAA finals clash. The Chargers gave the Colts everything they could handle with the scoreboard reading 29-28 at halftime, but the high-powered Korah offence would not be denied in the second half as they raced away with their sixth NOSSA banner in seven years. Korah will now be hunting down their fifth OFSAA triumph in the Golden Horseshoe Bowl against the winners from SOSSA, while Confederation will be making their first trip to the big dance representing Sudbury on the provincial level in the Independent Bowl against the runner-ups out of CWOSSA, who also have two bids.
  • Speaking of SOSSA, the final four is now officially set in stone with Westdale bringing an end to Westmount’s reign of terror with an impressive 35-19 victory to take home there first Hamilton public league title since 2015. It was a sad day for Westmount football fans who watched their Wildcats rip off six straight championship wins, but they’ve still got a heartbeat thanks to hosting the SOSSA playdowns this year which means they have a chance to write another chapter in their semifinals showdown against A.N. Myer, who defeated Sir Winston Churchill 28-7 to reclaim the Niagara public title. On the other side of the bracket, Westdale prepare to take on Notre Dame, who will be a familiar foe after these two kicked off the season in a non-league battle that saw the Warriors get the better of the Irish 35-20.

CFC60 JUVENILE RANKINGS

  • Continuing our tour through Ontario, St. James are District 10 champions again for the first time since 2021 after defeating John F. Ross 17-13 in the championship finals. They will now move onto the CWOSSA playdowns where two bids are up for grabs, but you know Lions aren’t going to settle for second best when there’s regional bragging rights on the line. Their first step towards a berth at the OFSAA Football Festival will be a semifinals matchup against St. John’s, who come into the game undefeated after running the table in Brantford. The winner out of CWOSSA will take on the champions from SWOSSAA in the Simcoe Bowl.
  • Holy Names are now the undisputed favourites in SWOSSAA after enacting their cold blooded revenge in the Windsor city finals with a dominant 31-9 victory over W.F. Herman. Most expected this to be a hard fought battle to the end as per usual when these two rivals meet, but the Knights had a different script in mind, and will now need to jump one more hurdle to book their ticket to the OFSAA Football Festival when they take on the winner of St. Pat’s and Ursuline College in the SWOSSAA finals.
  • St. Joan of Arc are one step closer to making their triumphant return to the OFSAA Football Festival after cruising by Patrick Fogarty 35-6 in the CSASC finals. In order to do so, they’ll be looking to crush the hopes and dreams of Maple Ridge, who just completed a magical season in the SCAA bringing home their first ever league banner with a 11-0 win over Barrie North in the finals. The winner will secure their spot in the Central Bowl where they will square off against Robert F. Hall representing ROPSSAA.

CFC40 NFL/CFL DRAFT RANKINGS

  • Just like any good Canadian road trip, we make our last Ontario stop in Thunder Bay where St. Ignatius were crowned league champions after putting together a perfect 41-0 blowout performance against Hammarskjold. The Falcons are now heading to the OFSAA Football Festival battle tested after surviving a league that was full of parity this season, and will be looking to celebrate their first provincial banner since 2018 when they take on Western Tech representing the Toronto public league in the Northern Bowl.
  • Time to cross the border into Quebec where there’s only two programs left standing in Juvenile DI. On one side of the bracket there was no surprises with the defending champions Saint-Jean-Eudes finding little resistance in their 32-0 shutout against Saint-Jean-Eudes. They’ll now get ready to lock horns with College Bourget in a rematch of the 2023 Bol d’Or after the Voltigeurs upset Charles-Lemoyne in a 21-20 thriller. If you played the game on paper, you’d heavily favourite the 9-1 Condors over the 6-4 Voltigeurs, but thankfully this isn’t the CFC50 Paper Football Rankings. College Bourget has struggled at times throughout the season, but they always show up in the big games, including their first matchup against Saint-Jean-Eudes where the Condors snuck away with a 25-23 victory. Will Saint-Jean-Eudes make it three straight? Or will College Bourget find a way to claim their first ever DI Bol d’Or?

RECRUITING TIPS

  • Isn’t it nice to be playing football from coast to coast again? Alberta wasted no time getting back to business in there first week back, and Harry Ainlay wasted no time defeating Salisbury 31-7 to claim their seventh Edmonton Metro title in eight years. They will now move on to to the provincial playdowns where they’ll take on a scrappy Notre Dame (Red Deer), who would love nothing more than to shock the nation, and truly what else can you ask for at this stage than a chance at glory? Salisbury’s season will roll on with a quarterfinals clash against Notre Dame (Calgary), who will be feeling all sorts of confident coming off a massive 38-16 win against St. Francis. Next on the card for St. Francis is a daunting matchup against Raymond in the quarterfinals, but they might be thinking anything is possible after Lethbridge CI took the Comets to the brink with Raymond narrowly escaping with a 22-18 victory. Lethbridge will be looking to build on that performance with a rematch against Ernest Manning in the quarterfinals, who were able to defeat the Rams 24-19 in their first meeting. It feels like we skipped the main course and are heading straight to dessert because this week promises to be a treat in Alberta.
  • Lastly we wrap-up another week of Canadian high school football madness in British Columbia, where the stage is set for a wild finish with four fantastic quarterfinal contests that promise to deliver all the drama we know you crave. On one side of the bracket we’ve got the top seed W.J. Mouat taking on New Westminster for the first time this year, and waiting on the other side will be the winner between Centennial and South Delta, where the Sun Devils will be going over the tape from their 22-20 regular season loss to the Centaurs with a fine toothed comb in an attempt to flip the script this time around. On the other side we’ve got a juicy rematch between Robert Bateman and Vancouver College, who needed overtime to decide the season opener, and of course nobody will truly believe the Fighting Irish are dead until someone can beat them in the playoffs. Meanwhile Notre Dame will be looking to pull off another upset against Lord Tweedsmuir after a convincing 27-7 win over St. Thomas More in the first round, who keep in mind also managed to defeat Lord Tweedsmuir during the regular season. All to play for on the West Coast, and we can’t wait to find out who survives the quarterfinals gauntlet.
