OVFL: The varsity Thunder held on Β to defeat the Newmarket Bucs 14 to 9
Coming off a bye week the varsity Thunder were able to regroup following a shutout loss to Kingston and take one from the Newmarket Bucs 14-9.
The Thunder played a solid defensive game, something that seems to be becoming a theme early in this 2013 season under new coach Sean Thomas. The stingy Thunder defense allowed a mere five completions while notching an interception. On the ground the Thunder held the Bucs ground game to just 118 yards on the day.
On defense Rowan Turner had eight tackles (4 assisted, 4 solo), a sack, and a fumble recovery, and Jake Smith had eight tackles (5 assisted, 3 solo), a batted ball and an interception.
Thunder multi-purpose threat Chris Larsen made an impact in every phase of the game, getting the nod at quarterback, on defense, and on specials. Larsen completed seven passes for 145 yards and a touchdown while adding 22 yards and a touchdown on the ground. On defense Larsen had eight tackles (4 assisted, 4 solo), and handled both punting and kickoff duties in a truly dynamic performance.
137 of the 145 yards the Thunder had through the air came courtesy of receiver Shomari Murdock-Reid who also caught the lone passing touchdown from Larsen.
The Thunder head to Niagara this Saturday to face a hot Spears team that has rattled off three dominant victories in a row. Kickoff is 7:30 at Kiwanis field.
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
