The Hamilton Wentworth Minor Football Association (HWMFA) Atom AAA Tiger-Cats continued their dominant season in Central Ontario Minor Football League (COMFL) action this past week-end.
The Atom team, coached by former CFL player Joe Sardo, went into the game 2-0 after beating Twin Cities (Kitchener-Waterloo) and Toronto to begin the season.Β However, game three of their season was against the Β Burlington Stampeders, a perennial powerhouse at every age group. Β The game was played at Hamilton Wentworthβs own dedicated football complex, MacRae Fields, and the home team quickly showed Burlington that they were ready and jumped out to a 15-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
The Stamps were able to get on the board in the 2ndΒ quarter, but they were visibly frustrated from being in a position that Burlington teams rarely find themselves in.Β The Tiger-Cats, aided by some Stampeder penalties, were able to score an additional 24 points in the second quarter, and by half-time the score was 39-9 for the home team.
The start of the second half saw a fired up Burlington team take the field.Β They made some adjustments and started the second half in a no huddle offense.Β They were able to keep Hamilton Wentworthβs high powered offense in check, and outscored the home team 9-0 in the third quarter.Β The Tiger-Cats settled down in the 4thΒ quarter.Β They did not allow the Stampeders to score any more points and added another touchdown to make the final 45-18.Β The star of the game for Hamilton Wentworth was Donovin Milloy with 6 Touchdowns.Β Coach Sardo is impressed at how well this group of 9 and 10 year old kids are picking up on elements of the game that are not usually taught until high-school ages.
He stated, βWe have a practice plan at every practice, and these kids are picking up things so quickly we have been able to progress quicker than I had planned. They are a fantastic group of kids, and my coaching staff is having a lot of fun helping them develop.β
Next up for the undefeated Tiger-Cats, the Guelph Bears bring their perfect 3-0 record into town.Β This should be a great test for Hamilton Wentworthβs high powered offence, as the Guelph team has yet to allow a touchdown against in their first three games.Β Game timeΒ Sunday September 22 at 12:00pm.
