Smith enjoys breakout season with Thunder.
This past weekend, the junior varsity Scarborough Thunder suffered their first loss of the season against a formidable Cumberland Panthers squad. Yet, amid a talented and experienced Thunder roster, quarterback Connor Smith continues to shine.
At 5β8, 160 pounds, the 16 year old Malvern student has been having a career year. Smith is throwing at a 73 percent completion rate (54 completions in 73 attempts), has accumulated close to 1000 yards, and has thrown 12 touchdowns and 4 interceptions.
When asked about his teamβs success, Smith credits his offensive unit.
βOur receivers have been making huge plays down field, and our O-Line has been playing greatβ, said Smith. Β βEveryone is buying in and playing their roleβ¦ that is the reason for our success”
In 2013, Smith became an OVFL All-Star, leading his team to a respectable 5-4 on the season. Now with only three games remaining in 2014, Smith is at the forefront of a 4-1 Thunder squad.
βThe Thunder organization has taught me a lot,β says Smith, βBoth the coaches and older guys have taught me to focus on what you really want and not let outside distractions stop you from achieving your goalsβ
In terms of his football future, Smith has set a goal for himself; to play at the CIS level.
βI want to play university ball and get an education while doing it,β added Smith.
Smith will have a lot of time to grow and prepare for his time as a senior at high school. He does, however, have his sights on Yates Cup Champions, Western Mustangs.
βMy brother is heading to Western University,β said Smith, βIt would be fun to play with himβ
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
