Agar runs to daylight in championship effort for Riot

Part of an overpowering offense with the Regina Riot that seemingly scored at will, running back Carmen Agar was the perfect complement to MVP quarterback Aimee Kowalski. With remarkable acceleration, Agar helped create a balance on offense, overwhelming opposing defenses into submission.

Culminating with a WWCFL championship, the Regina Riot’s historic road to glory in 2015 established them as a team that delivered on all accounts. The accomplishments generated by this event comprise a legend poised to grow with magnitude.

Agar’s efforts in the championship game resulted in a superlative 104-yard performance. Her velocity on the playing surface at Investor’s Group Field in Winnipeg set the tone for what became a 30-0 halftime advantage against the Edmonton Storm, culminating in a 53-7 final.

Through it all, Agar remained humble and gracious, exemplifying the qualities that make her such a valued teammate. Acknowledging the tireless efforts of her offensive line, it provided a much deeper appreciation,

“Rushing for 100+ yards was a memorable achievement. Yet, it would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the offensive line and receiving core.

Their skill and attention to detail all season long made my job easy, running almost untouched into the end zone a couple times. Anyone can run through a wide open hole, but the hard work of my teammates on each and every play is what put me over the 100 yard mark and they deserve the credit as much as I do.”

With due deference to the Edmonton Storm, the litmus test during this season for the Riot was its Prairie Conference title game against the Saskatoon Valkyries. Despite handing the Valkyries their first-ever loss on home soil in the regular season, its status as four-time defending champion still carried significant weight as ample intimidation.

Not hiding from such setbacks, the collaborative effort on part of the Riot separated the Valkyries from their ambitions of a fifth consecutive title. The ability to advance to their first-ever WWCFL championship game served as a remarkable source of inspiration, serving as a turning point in franchise history. For Agar, the chance to see the franchise reach this milestone and prevail as league champions was like a weight lifted from their dedicated shoulders,

“There was almost a sense of relief. This organization has certainly gone through some growing pains over the past five seasons and it was an incredible feeling to finally achieve what everyone involved has worked so hard for. We were all very proud of each other and ecstatic that all of our hard work had paid off. It felt very surreal.

I think we all believed it from the very first practice. Coach McCall and the entire coaching staff did an incredible job of hammering that belief into us from day one. We knew we had the skill and winning a championship was something that we all wanted, so the only thing left to do was to go out onto the field each week and prove that.”

Although the chance to grab the elusive championship was a surreal experience, likely generating occasional feelings that must have been a dream, the victory represented more than a treasured milestone for Agar and her teammates. It was a chance to look boldly at future possibilities, while reflecting on the efforts that made the journey so worthwhile. In such reflections, Agar acknowledged the support and encouragement of those who helped make her dream come true, including an injured teammate whose efforts helped make the journey worthwhile.

“I would really like to dedicate the championship win to all of my friends and family that has supported my football career since it began four years ago, as well as a good friend and teammate, Chantel Morrison, who was unable to play this season due to injury.”
