Bishop’s add to coaching staff

SHERBROOKE, Que. – A CFL veteran as both a player and coach, a Grey Cup champion and a number of connections at the U SPORTS level are all part of Jerome Erdman’s resume. On Thursday Bishop’s University Head Football Coach Cherif Nicolas announced that Erdman has joined the Gaiters coaching staff as special team’s coordinator.

Erdman played for Simon Fraser University from 1979-1981 before moving onto the CFL where he won a Grey Cup with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1984. Erdman also played for the Ottawa Roughriders and Edmonton Eskimos. After eight seasons in the CFL he headed overseas to the Glasgow Lions in Europe where he continued to play for five more years.  He worked as a player-coach then retired and took the reins of the team in 1996. Following that he spent three years coaching the Scottish Claymores in NFL Europe.

Erdman returned to Canada and enjoyed three stints coaching the UBC Thunderbirds and also spent time on the McGill sideline.  He was the linebackers and special teams unit coach for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats from 2002-06 and a receivers coach and special teams assistant with the Toronto Argonauts in 2008.

Most recently Erdman was the head coach of the Vancouver Island Raiders of the Canadian Junior Football League.

“We are excited to have someone with as much experience as Jerome to work with our student-athletes,” said Nicolas. “Like Marc (Loranger), Pat (Boies) and myself, Jerome has been a head coach, an offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and he’s a seasoned special teams coordinator which makes him a valuable addition to our staff.”

The Gaiters continue their off-season workouts as they look ahead to their new era in Atlantic University Sport.  Their first game of the 2017 schedule is slated for Saturday, Sept. 2 against the Acadia Axemen in Wolfville, N.S.
