Bisons to play first ever CIS game during preseason on Vancouver Island

The Manitoba Bisons will have an early test to begin the 2016 Canada West football season as they open up on the road in a pre-season game against the defending CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) champion UBC Thunderbirds on Friday, August 26 with a 7 p.m. PT kickoff.Ā

This is the first-ever CIS football game on Vancouver Island as the contest will be played at Westhills Stadium in Langford, British Columbia.

“We are excited about this pre-season game and the opportunity to be part of the first-ever CIS football game to be played on Vancouver Island,” stated Bison football head coachBrian Dobie. “This will be a unique experience. The game is magnified as we thank UBC for the invitation to be part of this historic game and compete against the defending CIS champion.”

This is also the first game for Manitoba against UBC in a pre-season football tilt.

The Bisons will start training camp two weeks earlier than the pre-season game and this is Manitoba’s only game prior to start of the 2016 Canada West conference regular season.

Dobie talked about the significance of playing this momentous game, “Vancouver Island, and in particularly Victoria, has been probably the most productive area of recruiting for Bison Football on a national level for the past two decades. We are hopeful there will be a huge group of Bison alumni able to attend the game to watch two of the top teams in the country and support the Bisons.”

The full Bison Football Canada West regular season schedule for 2016 will be announced by the conference in mid-April.

Bison Notes: In 2015, Manitoba hosted the Guelph Gryphons in the first-ever CIS pre-season football game in Investors Group Field and the game ended in a 33-33 tie. Langford is a city located on southern Vancouver Island and is one of 13 municipalities of Greater Victoria.
