BLOG: Thursday Sacks (4)

Welcome to yet another edition of Thursday sacks. I hope you all enjoy the CIS football action this past weekend. I sure did as my university beat its rivals, McGill Redmen. The Calgary Dinos last Thursday prove to the CIS that they might be one of the best teams ever in CIS football history as they hammered Alberta Golden Bears, 80-18 and were the top ranked team in the country for the second week in a row. Acadia stunned the defending AUS champions, Mount Allison by one point, 25-24 which earned them tenth place in this week’s top ten CIS poll. Here are my picks for the top defensive players of the week.

Alberta Golden Bears defensive back, Tak Landry.
It is very hard to talk about a great defensive performance when your team gets blowout like the Bears did last week. The Bears defense did give up 975 total yards in their lost to the Dinos. Landry was the only bright spot in the lost as he had seven solo tackles, six assists for a total of ten tackles in the game. He also had one forced fumble in the game. Landry currently is fourth in the nation for solo tackles with 24 in three games. The Golden Bears lead the CIS in number of tackles per a game with 63.7 tackles.

Saskatchewan Huskies linebacker, Dane Bishop.
Bishop played a huge role in the Huskies first win of the season over Regina Rams last Friday night. Bishop in the 33-18 victory had eight solo tackles and two assists for a total of nine tackles in the game. He also had one sack for a loss of four yards and also had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. The Huskies are second in the nation for tackles per a game with 62 tackles in total.

Acadia Axemen defensive lineman, Drew Morris.
Morris was outstanding in the Axemen one point win over Mount Allison last Saturday afternoon. Morris had eight solo tackles, six assists for a total of 11 tackles in the game. He also recovered a fumble. Morris is third in the CIS for tackles per a game with average of 10. The Acadia’s defense in its first two games only has allowed its opponents to score 39 points which place them fourth in the CIS.

Ottawa Gee-Gees linebacker, Marc-Antoine Laurin.
Laurin tormented the Windsor Lancers offensive line in the 52-24 win. Laurin had seven solo tackles which includes two sacks for a loss of 23 yards and also forced a fumble in the victory. Laurin is sixth in the country for sack yards with 23. The Gee-Gees are second in fumble recoveries within the CIS and fourth in sacks throughout the CIS.The Gee-Gees for the first time this season made the CIS top ten because of their great performance over the Lancers.

Western Mustangs defensive lineman, John Biewald.
Biewald dominated the Queen Gaels offense line in the 48-25 victory. He had five solo tackles and two assists for a total of six tackles. He was a sack machine as he recorded three sacks for a loss of 17 yards for this effort he was named CIS defensive player of the week. He is now second in the CIS for sacks with 4 and half. He also third for sack yards with 26. The Western defense lead the CIS in sacks with 20 and also first in interceptions. There is a reason why they are in the top five each week of the CIS top ten poll.

Guelph Gryphons linebacker, John Rush.
Rush has been one of the most dominated defensive players in the CIS so far. In the Guelph’s 33-23 victory over McMaster, Rush had six solo tackles and 11 assists for a total of 11 and half tackles. He also had a forced fumble and recovered a fumble. Rush leads the CIS in tackles with 36 and also assists on tackles with 38.Rush is the early favorite to win the president trophy.

Sherbrooke Vert et or safety, Alexandre Gagne.Gagne had solid game in the Vert et Or, 32-13 lost to university of Montreal Carabins. Gagne had eight solo tackles and two assists for a total of nine tackles in the game. He also had one tackle for a loss of a yard. The Vert et Or defense is eighth in the CIS for points per a game with an average of 19.7.It has not been an easy road for them as they played Laval and University of Montreal in the last two games. They almost beat the Laval two weeks as they lost in OT with a field goal. Gagne will look to bring the Vert et Or back to earth as they play Mont Alison this weekend.

Concordia Stingers linebacker, Arto Khatchikian.
Khatchikian had a huge Shrine Bowl game against the McGill Redmen last Saturday afternoon. He was a big reason why the Stingers won, 33-21. He had seven solo tackles, two assists for a total of eight tackles. He also had one sack for a loss of nine yards and one interception which was return for 11 yards. The Stingers defense is second in the CIS for interception with eight.

UBC Thunderbirds linebacker, Terrell Davis.
Davis had a fantastic game in UBC’s, 51-48 win over Manitoba Bisons. Davis had eight solo tackles, two assists for a total of nine tackles. He also had one sack for a loss of nine yards. The Thunderbirds have a trio of great defense players with Davis, Taylor Loffler and Mitch Barnett. UBC is fourth in tackles per a game with an average of 61.3 tackles.
