CFC10 specialist lands with Western

Western adds a top Ontario commit to their 2020 class.

CFC10 Cam Creechan, a kicker from Ursuline College, knows he has found a home with the Western Mustangs.

Creechan is no stranger to TD Stadium, the Mustangs home field. He said he spend five years kicking between 300 to 500 balls a week in the rain, snow and heat in the stadium. “For me, it is just a matter of being comfortable there,” he said. “I committed to Western because it felt right.”

He added that he attended Western’s homecoming game this past season. “With 12,000 fans, the atmosphere was electric,” he said. “I think it is just the best place for me to go and grow and learn, a place that I felt comfortable.”

Creechan, who is interested in kinesiology and eventually teacher’s college, noted that the team’s coaching staff is top notch. He said that Greg Marshall, the head coach, Kevin MacNeill, the special teams coach, and Darryl Wheeler, the kicking coach, ensured that he had every opportunity to check out the football side of the school.

“They made sure I was able to sit down and discuss classes and academics with not only professors but with players who are in later years of kinesiology,” he added.

“Probably the best part was they not only gave me the time to explore other schools and football programs (but) they encouraged me to look at other schools. It left me with the feeling that they wanted what was best for me. They wanted me to be comfortable with my decision to commit to Western.”

The 6’0, 195lbs athlete has played as a linebacker, kicker and punter. He started playing football in grade four with the Chatham Kent Cougars (OFC) and hasn’t missed a season since. He played with the Cougars in the summer and with Chatham Minor Football in the fall. In grade nine he started playing high school ball with the Ursuline College Lancers (LKSAA). He also participated in four Fox 40 Prospect Challenges from 2015 to 2018 with Team West.

Creechan was a member of the senior varsity Cougars in grade nine because there was no junior varsity team. He was named as an all-star punter for the Dittmer Conference. He was awarded the special teams MVP for the Lancers in 2015, 2016 and 2017. In 2016 and 2017, he was also a defensive and special teams captain. He is a two-time LKSSAA champion in 2015 and 2016.

Coach Kick Elite Specialist ranked him as a 4.5/5-star kicker and punter. In 2017, he made 9 out of 12 field goals and averaged 37 yards a punt. He made the 2018 Nissan Canada all-Canadian high school team. In 2019, he was invited to participate in the ‘Top Kicker in America’ competition. He finished third in punting and seventh in field goals.

While with the Cougars in 2019, he averaged five tackles a game as a linebacker. He also averaged 41.2 yards a punt and scored 12 out of 14 field goal attempts. His longest was 39 yards. He was named as the special teams MVP and was a defensive and special teams captain.

With the 2019 Lancers, he averaged seven tackles a game and 39 yards a punt. He also scored 9 out of 11 field goals with his longest being 48 yards. He was the team’s special teams MVP and defensive and special teams captain. He also helped his team win a LKSSAA championship.

“I love playing football,” he said. “Only people who have played the game understand that. Only people who have played the game understand how incredibly lucky I feel to be able to continue to play football at a higher level.”
