CFC10 U Sports Rankings Week 5: Laval and Saskatchewan reign supreme in rivalry clashes

We’ve seen some chatter online about the current U Sports Rankings system.

If there’s one thing we love at Canadafootballchat.com, it’s a good rankings controversy, so we figured why not jump into the melee with our own weekly U Sports Top 10.

We’ll be dropping new rankings every Wednesday for the remainder of the U Sports season while recapping the top storylines from across the country.

TOP HEADLINES

• It’s the most highly anticipated game of the year whenever Laval and Montréal meet to settle bragging rights in Québec. This edition of the rivalry lived up to all the expectations with Montréal clawing back from a 12 point deficit at halftime to go ahead 27-24 heading into the fourth quarter, only for Laval to then put up 18 points in the final 15 minutes to secure a 42-34 victory. It was a passing frenzy with Carabins QB Pepe Gonzalez throwing for 415 yards in the losing effort, while Rouge et Or QB Victor Charland put together a near flawless performance going 26/32 for 382 yards and three majors. Montréal WR Enrique Jaimes Leclair couldn’t be contained catching an astounding 14 passes for 185 yards and one touchdown, while Laval WR Guill Cauchon nearly matched his output on six fewer receptions finishing with 181 yards and one trip to the end zone. The Rouge et Or landed the first blow in 2026, and we’re excited to see who lands the second when these two meet again in Montréal in the season finale where home field advantage will likely be on the line heading into the playoffs.

• It was a dogfight in Hamilton with McMaster scrapping until the final whistle against Western, who were able to stave off the Marauders second half surge to hold on for the 32-25 victory. A late touchdown with 24 seconds left on the clock by McMaster WR Shane Wismer made the final score closer than it would’ve been, but regardless of the optics, the Marauders should take a lot of confidence from their never say die attitude. On another day with less mistakes, there’s no reason why McMaster couldn’t come out on top against the Mustangs. On the flip side, Western will feel like they had too many self inflicted wounds with QB Jerome Rancourt completing just 41% of his passes while throwing three interceptions, and yet they still managed to find a way to come out on top with the help of a stellar performance by WR Emmett Charles, who caught eight of Rancourt’s 12 completions for 180 yards and three touchdowns. If McMaster get another bite at the purple apple in the playoffs, they know they’ll have to step their game up to take advantage of every little mistake the Mustangs make.

CFC100 CLASS 2027 RANKINGS

• Nothing could separate the Rams and Huskies with the score deadlocked at 17-17 heading into halftime in the Battle of Saskatchewan, but a 21 point third quarter burst by the Huskies provided enough breathing room to hold on for a 38-31 victory. Regina will be kicking themselves for their sleepy third quarter performance, but they can take solace in knowing that they can go toe-to-toe with their rivals if they just put together a full 60 minute performance. They also will need to find a solution to slow down the Huskies vaunted passing game after QB Anton Amundrud lit them up for 369 yards and a pair of touchdowns to his favourite target WR Dawson Lennea, who had a season high seven catches for 108 yards. This will be the only regular season contest between these provincial foes, and we’d be lying if we weren’t praying for one more playoff edition of the Battle of Saskatchewan in November.
