2026 CFC25 Tier II Rankings WEEK 9: Miraculous finish in Saskatoon after two point gamble

TOP HEADLINES

  • Desperation can reveal a team’s biggest flaws, or it can reveal their true character. That sinking feeling of desperation must’ve been running rampant throughout the Bishop J. Mahoney sidelines as they watched their season slowly slipping away down 21-14 against Aden Bowman in the Saskatoon 5A championship game, but then a lifeline appeared in the form of a forced fumble with just over a minute left on the clock that gave the Saints one last gasp. They took full advantage of the Bears’ gaff quickly driving the ball down field to score what should’ve been the game-tying touchdown, but then a penalty by Aden Bowman on the convert forced the coaching staff into a do or die decision. Instead of rekicking the convert and hopefully heading to overtime, the Saints decided a one yard plunge across the goal line was their best chance at victory. At some point in life we all need to roll the dice, and thankfully for Bishop J. Mahoney their gamble paid off pulling ahead 22-21 with just 30 seconds left on the clock. Their defence rewarded the risky decision by shutting down the Bears’ final comeback attempt to help the Saints claim their third straight Saskatoon championship. Bishop J. Mahoney will now take on Carlton in the 5A provincial semifinals, who ran the table in the North Saskatchewan league with a flawless 6-0 record after defeating North Battleford in the championship game. These two faced off in non-league action earlier in the season with the Saints running away with a 31-6 victory, but anything can happen in November.

  • On the other side of the bracket we’ll have Central and Sheldon Williams squaring off with a berth in the 5A Saskatchewan provincial finals hanging in the balance. Central reclaimed the South Rural title by holding off a furious second half comeback attempt by Swift Current to secure a 28-21 victory. The Colts deserve a huge shoutout after putting together a fantastic season that saw them host their first league final since 1981, but unfortunately they couldn’t find a way to end their championship drought that dates back to 1999. Central will now turn their attention to Sheldon Williams, who capped off a perfect season in the Regina Stewart Division with a dominant 35-7 victory over Martin-Luther in the finals, and now have a chance to make their first 5A provincial final since 2018. If they manage to win the whole thing, it will be their first provincial championship since 2006.
  • In the grand scheme of things it doesn’t really matter, but you try telling that to St-Jean-Vianney, who handed Saint-Joseph their first loss of the year in their regular season finale. The seeding stays the same with Saint-Joseph locked in as the one seed earning a bye, and St-Jean-Vianney slotted as the third behind Roger-Comtois, who earned the tiebreaker by defeating the Dragons in the season opener 30-28. Technically the win is irrelevant, but you have to imagine St-Jean-Vianney will be heading into their first round matchup against Triolet full of confidence with the belief that they have what it takes to win it all this year.

CFC100 CLASS 2027 RANKINGS

  • We’ve reached the semifinals in Manitoba, and we’ve got a couple of unexpected guests in the final four with Kelvin pulling off the upset against Sisler, and Windsor Park shocking Springfield. It sets up some great storylines with Kelvin looking to keep their underdog run alive against River East, who had no issues defeating Kildonan East 38-0 in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile on the other side of the bracket, the upstart Windsor Park Royals look to do the impossible and make it all the way to the championship game in their first season at the varsity level, but that will be a lot easier said than done with undefeated West Kildonan standing in their way coming off another 42-0 beatdown against Maples in the opening round.
