#CFC100 Berglund: “I know that with my athleticism and nose for the ball, I will be extremely successful…at SELU”

The highest remaining #CFC100 recruit is off the market.

Just before Easter weekend, Isaac Berglund made his ultimate gridiron dream come true.

Last Thursday, the 6’3, 235 pound defensive end from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia officially announced at CEGEP school Champlain-Lennoxville that he accepted an offer with NCAA Division 1 Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Sotuheastern Louisiana Lions.

“The decision to go to Southeastern Louisiana was made on the weekend,” expressed Berglund of his decision. Ā “Ultimately, the financial factor played a huge role in things and made everything a lot easier.”

Patience was a virtue for the #CFC100. Ā Prior to February’s NCAA National Signing Day, Berglund received offers from Divison 1 Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) team Robert Morris Colonials as well as Division 2 squads Simon Fraser Clan and West Virginia State Yellow Jackets.

However, he held out in the hopes of getting a full ride. In the midst of gaining a ton of heightened interest, the defensive standout received a trio of NCAA Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) offers from Penn State Nittany Lions, Texas Tech Red Raiders and Temple Owls.

“Leading up to signing things were really shaky because I didn’t know whether the NCAA was a viable option or not,” recalled Berglund. Ā “Receiving those three preferred walk-on offers really made things heat up and a lot of smaller schools started to contact me.”

Then on March 14th, the Lions came to the plate and offered him the one thing he was seeking during the recruitment process – a full on NCAA offer.

Not needing a whole lot of time, Berglund made the decision to sign with the Lions on the weekend of March 18th.

“SELU was the only school that invested a full-scholarship on me and I’m extremely excited to invest all I have into them and that is the reason I signed with them,” said the #CFC100 of his choice.

The defensive standout capped off his career with CEGEP Division 1ā€™s Champlain-Lennoxville Cougars by helping the team win the Bol Dā€™Or Championship this past November.

Previous to the Cougars, Berglund suited up for the Dartmouth High Spartans of the Nova Scotia Student Athletic Federation Football League (NSSAFFL). During his time with the Spartans, he was selected as a NSSAFFL Nova Division First-team All-Star at both the linebacker and defensive line positions. Additionally, he was named Spartans Defensive Player of the Year and MVP.

Now with the bid decision made, the #CFC100 will focus his attention on preparing for the next chapter of his gridiron career south of the border with the goal of making a positive, yet immediate impact on the Lions.

“I do feel relieved to be committed and going forward my preparation will be the same as always just at a completely different intensity,” offered Berglund. Ā “At SELU I will be playing in a 3-4 scheme and playing OLB, which I believe will be a beneficial move for me from defensive end especially when looking at the NFL and CFL.”

“I know that with my athleticism and nose for the ball I will be extremely successful under Coach Schwanz (Linebacker Coach).”

With the signing, Berglund was reflective of his recruitment process, especially the tremendous support and encouragement he received from several individuals which enabled him to chase his gridiron pursuits.

“I would obviously like to thank my grandparents and and my mother; they are my reason and my motivation,” expressed Berglund. “My coach (JF) Joncas; he has pushed me and given me the opportunity to thrive in an extremely competitive environment.”

“Also all the Coaches that recruited me; I can’t say enough about the coaches that recruited me, they believed in me and i’ve made so many great connections with them.”
