CFC100 Huron Heights Warrior CB flocking to Carleton

Carleton brings in a highly-touted Ontario commit to their Class of 2017.

Ottawa has a population of over 900,000 people, but anyone living in the city knows it has an unusual small-town feeling. CFC100 Danny McWhirter, a corner from Huron Heights Secondary School, noticed Carleton University, with its 28,300 students, has a similar feel.

β€œI chose Carleton because I felt more at home,” the resident of Mount Albert, Ontario, said. β€œI come from a small town and Carleton’s got a smaller campus and it just felt right to me.”

It probably helped that the Ravens coaches had an air of tranquility around them. β€œI found that I felt very comfortable talking with the coaches at Carleton. Spending time with Coach Hall, Coach Bechmanis and Coach Sumarah both in groups and one-on-one, I just felt it was really easy to talk to them and I feel like I can learn a lot from them to help develop my skills,” he said.

Having played seven years, the 6’3, 175lbs athlete has probably seen a few locker rooms in his career. When he visited the Ravens’ facilities, it made his decision that much easier. β€œThe indoor practice field, the weight room and the change room were all amazing and I could see myself being a player at Carleton,” McWhirter said.

The Huron Heights Warrior (York Regional Athletic Association) also had academics on his mind while touring Carleton. He said that the school has a Criminology program he would like to take. He added that he feels there are lot of possibilities for future employment stemming from that program.

During his time with the Warriors, he was a 2015 OFSAA champion and a YRAA all-star. He was also a OVFL all-star with the York Simcoe Bucs. The following year, he made the all-star list again and had his name etched into the CFC Top 100. He also was named a 2nd-team All-Canadian. In 2017, he was named to the U19 junior national team.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
