CFC100 WR John Metchie III diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia

It was a sad day in the Canadian football world as CFC100 top ranked Class of 2019 WR John Metchie III announced he has been diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia.

In a statement posted on the Texans’ Twitter account, Metchie III says he is getting treatment for acute promyelocytic leukemia, “the most curable form,” and expects “to make a recovery at a later point in time.”

“As a result of this diagnosis, I will likely not be playing football this season,” Metchie III said. “My main focus will be on my health and recovery. … I cannot wait to come back stronger than ever.”

Metchie III was selected 44th overall by the Houston Texans in the 2022 NFL Draft after a successful collegiate career with the Alabama Crimson Tide. He was a key member of the Crimson Tide’s 2020 National Title run, and would’ve been an impact player in their title defense before suffering a torn ACL in the SEC Championship last year. Unfortunately the timing of his injury also effected his draft stock, but scouts couldn’t ignore how dominant he was prior to his injury catching 96 passes for 1142 yards and 8 touchdowns. In total he finished his career at Alabama catching 155 passes for 2081 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
