#CFC50 Games of the week [3]: Rumble on the island, clash of the colors, and a Royal eclipse

We will be previewing the #CFC50 Games of the Week for Canada West and the Maritimes (Ontario and Quebec are done separately).

While this will be generally geared towards the #CFC50 ranked teams, we want to hear from you if there are great rivalry games or exciting matchups, regardless of tier or division, that we aren’t aware of. Send us a ‘heads up’ by WEDNESDAYΒ each week and we’ll see what we can do:Β [email protected].

*Note: Some information was not available at press time.Β It will be added as it becomes available.

….and now let’s get to it with this week’s #CFC50 Games of the Week

[#CFCscoresΒ for BC]

No. 6 Vancouver College Fighting Irish (Vancouver, BC) vs.Β No. 16 Mount Douglas Rams (Victoria, BC) Sept 23

Game of the week! This is a rematch of last year’s provincial AAA final and will feature two of the best QB’s in the province in 2016. This game could very well be a dual between #CFC100 Jacob Samuels and Gideon Kremler. Another interesting matchup in this game is Mt. Doug’s LB Quinn Jenish and VC’s RB Michael Le, who was just recently added to the #CFC100 list.

Both teams are coming off a win last week and will want to start their in-conference play on a successful note.

No. 12 Terry Fox Ravens (Port Coquitlam, BC) vsΒ No. 47 St. Thomas More Knights (Burnaby, BC) Sept 23Β

Terry Fox will look to rebound after a bye week after a tough loss to Vancouver College two weeks ago. The Ravens will look to get back on track by relying on #CFC100 RB/LB Jeremie Kankolongo who averaged 9.86/yds per carry against VC.

STM turned a lot of heads during their non-conference schedule with a big win against the Notre Dame Jugglers and going toe to toe with Vancouver College losing a tight game 20-14. Because of their competitiveness in their last two games, STM has pushed themselves into the #CFC50 high school National rankings.

No. 17 NewΒ WestminsterΒ Hyacks (New Westminster, BC) vs Carson Graham (BC) Sept 23

The Hyacks (2-1) will show off their “New Look & New Ground” along with another exciting game for Homecoming 2016. The whole community is invited to cheer on the Hyacks Varsity team as they take on the Carson Graham Eagles (0-2) from North Vancouver, this Friday night, September 23 at Mercer Stadium. The Hyacks will be led by #CFC100 LB Trew Dancey who had 4 carries for 30/yds and 1 TD to go along with 3 solos, 1 assist, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 fumble recovery all in the first half.Β

After suffering a 42-21 loss to Scapoose earlier in the month, the Hyacks have been on a roll rattling off two straight wins and have outscored their opponents by a combined score of 79- 38.

β€œI am reasonably happy but far from satisfied,” said Hyacks Head Coach Farhan Lalji, β€œOur competitive level and resolve was very good against Notre Dame and our execution improved a lot last week vs GW Graham. We are ready for league play to begin.”

For Carson Graham, it has been a tough couple of weeks having dropped back to back games against WJ Mouat (8-7 loss) and Handsworth last week (33-28 loss). Despite the close defeats, Head Coach Brian Brady is still very much optimistic about his squad. β€œWe’ve learned a lot about ourselves as a team and know we can compete at the AAA level. We have an experienced group and this will pay off. Losing the first two games against BC opponents by a combined 6 points is tough, but we know we were 2-3 plays away from being 2-0 not 0-2,” Brady said.

With the Hyacks on a roll of late, Brady knows his team will have to be at their best if the want to come away with a win. β€œThis will be a tough test. New West is in mid-season form and they look polished on offence and flow well and swarm on defence. They (New West) runs a Single wing-t. However, it’s a much different style than the previous Wing teams we have played. They are fast and are a team that does very well at generating the big play,” continued Brady.

β€œI think Carson Graham is a high quality opponent. They are well coached and used to winning after taking the AA title last year. They have some good players returning and I think they will cause every team problems,” said Lalji about his opponent on Friday.

Over 2000 people are expected to attend and will have lots of pre-game festivities and even have parachutists delivering the game ball prior to kick-off! Schedule of events: 4:00 pm ALUMNI FLAG FOOTBALL GAME. 5:00 pm PRE-GAME PARTY featuring Family Fun Zone and a DJ from 94.5 FM Virgin Radio Street Squad. 6:00 pm ALUMNI RECEPTION – Refreshments will be served. Festivities include a prize-car draw presented by Key West, tug-of-war, skydivers, fireworks, half-time entertainment and The NWSS Band.

No. 50 South Delta Sun Devils ( South Delta, BC) vs Belmont Bulls (BC) Sept 23

South Delta’sΒ #CFC100 LBΒ Grant McDonald’s, who cracked the top 10 of the list, climb to the top has been steady over the past couple of years. If not for an upper body injury last season, he probably would have climbed even further. South Delta will look to get off to a quick start against the Bulls who have struggled the past couple of years.Β

John Barsby vs Ballenas Sept 23

The Rumble on the Island! This AA matchup will feature the Bulldogs versus the Whalers. This rivalry game is made interesting because of proximity. Last year, these two teams played and Ballenas came out on top 26-14. The Bulldogs will look to avenge this loss. After closing out a solid non-conference schedule that saw them go toe-to-toe with provincial champion’s Mt. Douglas Rams.

[#CFCscores for AB]

No. 1 St. Francis Browns (Calgary, AB)Β vs William Aberhart Orange (Calgary, AB)Β Sept 23

The Orange will have their hands full this weekend as they take on defending provincial champions St. Francis. It’s quite possible that the Browns will leave the Orange black and blue.

St. Francis will feature 3 #CFC100‘s to go along with 4 or 5 other legitimate CIS prospectsΒ such as RB Ethan Moroz, DB/LB Noah McDonough, and REC Alex Groshak.

No. 3 Bev Facey Falcons (Sherwood Park, AB) vs Jasper Place (Edmonton, AB)Β Sept 23Β

#CFC100 Chuba Hubbard will look to build on his resume as he ran for 250/yds on 23 carries and 1 TD last week No. 24 Henry Wise Wood in non-conference play. If you are making your way out to the game, there are several prospects who will also be playing in this game. There are 5 other legitimate prospects for Bev Facey, 2 of them play on the OL: Brett Hague and James Duffey and 1 who also plays DL and get this, punter, and could possibly be the biggest punter in North America in Tyreece Rockwell.

For Jasper Place, one prospect to watch is RB Alex Gayle. Take a look and see for yourself!

jonathan-rosary

No. 15 Harry Ainlay Titans (Edmonton, AB) vs Salisbury Sabres (Sherwood Park, AB)Β Sept 23

Recent University of Alberta Golden Bears commit and #CFC100 LB Tadi Siwira will lead his team in to battle against Sal Comp. Another one to watch in this game is the Titan’s, Jonathan Rosary, who is a 2018 grad, but is one of the more impressive RB’s in the province.

No. 24 Henry Wise Wood Warriors (Calgary, AB) vs Robert Thirsk Comets (Calgary, AB)Β Sept 23

HWW will look to rebound following a tough loss to Bev Facey 14-32 last weekend.Β #CFC100Β DL Tyrese Best looked unblock-able at times last weekend, will he continue to play lights out. There are some in the province of Alberta that think HWW’s defensive front 7 is as good as the St. Francis’ front 7.

If the Comets hope to be competitive, they need to blockΒ HWW’s front 7. If they don’t do that, this game will be over fast.

tyler-packer

No. 40 Notre Dame Pride (Calgary, AB) vs Ernest Manning Griffins (Calgary, AB)Β Sept 23

This game, like the others, will featureΒ #CFC100‘s on both sides, but we’re not sure how competitive the actual game itself will be. Ernest Manning has some great individual talent, but is not as well rounded as the Pride who have size, speed, and depth. If Manning can slow down ND’s rushing attack, they might have a chance. If not, Berglund and company will have a long afternoon.Β

cardston

No. 48 LCI Rams (Lethbridge, AB) vs Cardston Cougars Β (Cardston, AB)Β Sept 23

Traditionally, these two teams have been rivals, mostly from proximity. Both programs have not achieved at levels that they are used to recently (i.e. winning championships). This game will bring out the best in both teams.

No. 4 Leboldus Golden Suns (Regina, SK) vs Riffel Royals (Regina, SK)Β Sept 22

This is annually one of the top games played in Saskatchewan. Both teams have won their fair share of games and championships. #CFC100 RB Kyle Borsa for Riffel will attempt to lead the Royals against the Golden Sun and LB #CFC100 Nick Cross.

No. 21 Holy Cross Crusaders (Saskatoon, SK) vs Walter MurrayΒ Marauders (Saskatoon, SK)Β Sept 23

The highest ranked team in Saskatoon will play one of its inner city rivals the Marauders. HC will look to continue their climb up the polls with a win over Walter Murray.

No. 31 Campbell Tartans (Regina, SK) vs Winston Knoll Crusaders (Regina, SK)Β Sept 22

The Tartans will look to improve their record to 2-1 in league play as they take on the 0-2 Crusaders from Winston Knoll.

No. 44 Centennial Chargers (Saskatoon, SK) vs Bishop Mahoney SaintsΒ (Saskatoon, SK) Β Sept 22

The other #CFC50 ranked team in Saskatoon will be taking on the Bishop Mahoney Saints. Both teams enter the game undefeated at 2-0.

[#CFCscores for MB]

No. 11 St. Paul’s Crusaders (Winnipeg, MB) vs Sisler Spartans (Winnipeg, MB)Β Sept 23

The top team in Manitoba will look to continue it’s winning ways against the Spartans, who even though they are not ranked, should be a highly competitive contest. Sisler will have to bring their A game if they are to upset the mighty Crusaders. A win for St. Paul’s could potentially vault them into the Top 10 Nationally.

No. 20 Vincent Massey Trojans (Winnipeg, MB) Β vs Dakota Lancers (Winnipeg, MB)Β Sept 23

The Lancers look for their first win versus the Trojans after a 0-2 start. OLΒ Connor Kyliuk is a newcomer to the #CFC100 and will have a tough matchup against #CFC100 DE Jalen Burley from Massey. Dakota will be hard pressed to win this game.

[#CFCscores for NB]

No. 44 Tantramar Regional Titans (Sackville, NB) vs Moncton Purple Knight (Moncton, NB)Β Sept 23Β

Tantramar will look to stay undefeated as they go against the Purple Knights. Can anybody in New Brunswick stop RB Aidan O’Neal who ran for 192/yds on 10 carries and scored 5 rushing touchdowns. He also added 80 yards receiving on 2 receptions. At this point, O’Neal is averaging over 20 yards every time he touches the ball. Will Tantramar ride the O’Neal train once again?

[#CFCscores for NS]

*Note: No. 45 CP Allen is on a bye week

cec

Cole Harbour Cavaliers (Dartmouth, NS) vs Cobequid Ed. Centre Cougars (Truro, NS)Β Sept 23Β

CEC had a convincing win in week two as they defeated Halifax West by a score of 24-7. Their opponents, the Cole Harbour Cavaliers, had a bye and are now looking forward to taking on the Cougars from Cobequid. We don’t know too much about the contest itself, but we are looking forward to watching this matchup.
