CFC50 Games of the Week (juv. div.1/1b) RECAP: Curé-Antoine-Labelle sets the tone with big statement win; Blizzard continues to roll through with multiple ways to attack

Division 1

Académie Saint-Louis (7) v.s CFC50 Saint-Jean-Eudes (21)
It was a tight affair between Saint-Louis and Saint-Jean-Eudes to kick off the high school season in Quebec, but the Condors and quarterback Jérome Rancourt wouldn’t be defeated coming away with a 21-7 victory.

Both teams were able to find some traction at different periods of the game, but it was the steady play of Rancourt throughout that was the deciding factor. He finished the game with 181 yards through the air on 15/23 passes to go along with two touchdowns, and he also added 42 rushing yards on eight carries. Louis-David Bernier-Cloutier, Théo Boutin and Antoine Noël were all heavily involved combining for 13 of those receptions, with each going over 40 yards and the touchdowns accounted for by Bernier-Cloutier and Noël.

For Saint-Louis they couldn’t find the same rate of consistency, but they did get a big game out of receiver Cédrick Paradis, who led the way with seven receptions for 101 yards. That was the majority of the air traffic produced by quarterback Félix Lacasse, who nearly matched Rancourt in yards, but it took 38 attempts to get there which was far to many to stick around in this one. Their lone touchdown came on a connection between Lacasse and Olivier Goupil, who finished the game with 23 receiving yards.

On defence for Saint-Jean-Eudes, Rondeau leads the way with 7.5 tackles and Vincent Dorion snagged an interception, while for Saint-Louis Olivier Bouthot finished tops on the team with five tackles.

Académie les Estacades (0) v.s CFC50 É. sec. du Triolet (37)
William Legault threw three touchdowns passes to three different targets in a dazzling performance to help propel Triolet to an easy 37-0 victory over Estacadesto to open the year.

Mathieu Bernard was his main target catching four passes for 58 yards and a touchdown, Thierry De Champlain took his lone reception to the house on a 75 yard completion, and Jérémy Désindes chipped in for the third on a 20 yard play from scrimmage. Jérôme Provencher also had a productive day finishing with a touchdown and 74 yards out of the backfield, while the final touchdown came via special teams on a 75 yard return by Jean-Christophe Dion.

Estacadesto was in deep up against the Triolet defence led by Jérôme Loyer, but they were able to gain some turf with Jacob Lauzon finishing with 51 yards on eight carries, while Raphaël Blais and David Marcotte combined for a 5.4 average on five attempts.

Collège Laval (22) v.s Collège Jean-Eudes (10)
Defence dominated the game between Collège Laval and Collège Jean-Eudes, but it was Laval who came out on top in their D1 debut with the help of a few big plays by Nathan Vézina.

Turnovers could have easily derailed their celebrations, but Samuel Poulin did enough to get the job done with 14 completions for 186 yards and a touchdown that went to Vézina, who finished with a game high 94 yards on only three receptions. Samuel Filteau was the team leader in catches with five for 43 yards, while Elliot Capistran had some effective moments rushing the ball for 49 yards on 10 attempts.

On the other side, Théo Leblanc had a decent game under centre completing half his passes for 154 yards and a touchdown strike to Edouard Perrault-Laliberté, but they weren’t able to do any more damage despite spreading the ball around the field nicely. Vincent Beauregard was the prime suspect with five catches for 76 yards, which tied him for game high, while Frédérick Pagé and Rohan Jones also tallied three receptions apiece. Collège Jean-Eudes also had some field tilting plays with a pair of interceptions by Quoc Thien Ho and Frédrick Bérubé-Forté on defence, but unfortunately weren’t able to capitalize on the mistakes. Laval received a similar boost from Marvyn Bruyère, who left his stamp on the game with an interception and a sack.

CFC50 Collège Notre-Dame (7) v.s CFC50 É. sec. Curé-Antoine-Labelle (49)
If you were expecting a close matchup between two CFC50 squads to start the year, you’ll be sorely disappointed to hear that Curé-Antoine-Labelle walked their way to a 49-7 win over Collège Notre-Dame.

There’re plenty of guys to cherry pick from the Loups who contributed to the final score, but you’ve got to start with CFC100 Xavier Tremblay, who racked up four touchdown passes on just 12 attempts that covered 303 yards. You do the math, and that works out to a 25 yard average per pass, which I’d say is more than enough from your quarterback. Nine different receivers caught the ball throughout the game, and that includes a 3/3 stat line from Alexandre Cavanagh, who threw a touchdown pass to match his two receptions for 52 yards in a dual threat performance. On the receiving end of the day’s majors were Anthony Renault, Andrew Emmanuel Dauphin, Antoni Barthélus and Benjamin Madran, who double dipped for two. Renault also deserves special mention for leading the team with a combined 133 yards from scrimmage, while John-Nicky Giraud took his turn in the end zone with a 48 yard touchdown run to top off the scoring spree. As for the defence, it was clearly an all-around performance, but the highlight play belongs to Zachary Gauvreau who was able to get the only interception of the game.

It wasn’t all bad news for Notre-Dame despite the lopsided score with Justin Dupont completing 5/8 passes for 83 yards, but it was a one way road with every single play going in the direction of Andrew Menzies, who scored their lone touchdown.

CFC50 Séminaire Saint-François (36) v.s É. sec. Roger-Comtois (21)
It turned out to be a fairly competitive matchup between Séminaire Saint-François and Roger-Comtois, but you don’t get the title of champion for no reason, and it helps when you have CFC100 Kalenga Muganda who paved the way for a 36-21 victory.

SSF’s passing game was under control with Xavier Lavoie leading the troops at the line of scrimmage, which is the kind of scenario they’re looking to play out this season so they can unleash Muganda – and that’s exactly what they did. They didn’t completely overwork him, but he still got 27 touches which was enough for him to cover 280 yards and cross the goal line four times, and was also enough to open up the airways so Lavoie could pass for 192 yards, with 40 of those coming off a touchdown strike to Xavier Lacoste. Guillaume Cauchon was their most reliable target though leading the squad with four receptions for a game high 86 yards, and Étienne Landry also played his role finishing with four catches for 29 yards.

Roger-Comtois lived up to a great first test with some success in both facets on the game, and much of that is thanks to Allen Tremblay who ended up with 140 yards through the air with a touchdown to Maxime Brousseau. Gabriel Auclair was their leading rusher with 93 yards on 21 attempts, while Gabriel Loiselle led the team with four catches for 45 yards.

On defence, William Quenneville was all over the field for the Blizzard with 10 tackles, which was equally matched with a great performance by his Mathyas Giguère, who found his way to a pair of sacks and 6.5 tackles.

Division 1b

É. sec. de La Courvilloise (7) v.s  Polyvalente Deux-Montagnes (8)

Offensive struggle would be one way to describe the 1b opener, but Deux-Montagnes did enough to grease by with an 8-7 victory.

Deux-Montagnes only allowed 70 yards in the process with Charles-Antoine Desrochers leading the way with 7.5 tackles, and Yshad-Shane Benjamin picked up their only sack on top of a four tackle performance. Courvilloise actually produced more numbers defensively with sacks by their tackle leader Olivier Ruest, Cédrick Rousseau, Germain Genest, and Victor Trudeau, plus a pair of picks from Anthony Giroux and Nicolas Asselin, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to overcome their offensive woes.

É. sec. Armand-Corbeil (23) v.s Collège Charles-Lemoyne (16)
A dual attack was the key for Armand-Corbeil in their opener, who held on versus Charles-Lemoyne for a one score victory despite experiencing some difficulties stopping the run.

Justin Leduc completed 10/16 passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns, which was the difference maker with their opponents only able to get one aspect of their offence in full gear, although it wasn’t because they ignored the pass. There was no one in particular who took a hold of the receiving duties, but Leduc did find Olivier Cool and Thomas Gauthier for touchdowns, with the latter coming on an electric 56 yard hookup. Leduc also led the team with 58 rushing yards on 11 attempts, and was complimented by Julien Bahuka, who added in 49 yards of his own. The defensive effort was spearhead by Clyvens-Derly Louis, who led the team with 8.5 tackles including a sack, as well as Xavier Gendron-Larocque and Jeremy Lemay, who each stole an interception.

As mentioned, Charles-Lemoyne couldn’t get much from their aerial efforts, but Souleymane Camara did have a spectacular game amassing 110 yards on 20 carries, while quarterback Gabriel Cyr-Dandurand contributed 74 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown.

É. sec. Saint-Stanislas (30) v.s É. sec. Pointe-Lévy (14)
It was a battle between the run and the pass game in this one, and the run game won out with Saint-Stanislas coming out on top with a 30-14 win over Pointe-Lévy.

Marc-Antoine Allard did inflict some wounds with his arm finishing with 125 yards on seven completions, but it was his 54 yard rushing effort that was the bigger difference for Saint-Stanislas who completely dominated along the ground. Most of their attack was led by Terry Ferguson, who only carried the ball eight times, but finished with 112 yards and three touchdowns, which would have been enough to beat Pointe-Lévy by itself.

On the flip side it was all about the tandem of quarterback Maxime Lambert and receiver Simon Giguère, who’re on a whole different level chemistry wise connecting on nine passes for 202 yards and a major. They sadly were too one dimensional to overcome the deficit, but that’s still an incredible performance by both kids.

Séminaire Saint-Joseph (27) v.s  Collège de Lévi (23)

Offence was in the air for the season opener between Saint-Joseph and Collège de Lévi, but Louis-Christophe Lamy did enough under centre to secure a big W for Saint-Joseph.

It wasn’t his most accurate display, but Lamy spread the ball around to eight different receivers throughout the game including four to Émile Masse, who led the team with 104 yards and a very important touchdown.  Jérémie Caron was the other receiver to find the end zone, while William Abran provided support in the running game with five carries for 66 yards and a touchdown.

And although they were outdone on this day, it won’t happen very often if Zacharie Baron-Beliveau continues to throw for 221 yards and two touchdowns each game. He was often looking in the direction of Nathan Cloutier, who finished with a game high 11 catches for 116 yards, but he also completed a 17 yard pass to Mathieu Guérin for his second major.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
