Division 1

Saturday, October 14th at 12:00pm
Collège Laval v.s Académie Saint-Louis
It’s a tale of two different worlds in the top division right now, and both Collège Laval and Saint-Louis are living in the underworld battling it out for the final two playoff spots with just three games left to make their case.

Laval is coming off a crushing overtime loss to CFC50 Roger-Comtois, which is just another chapter in a year that has seen many ups and down along the way. They’ve only been able to secure one victory in their first season in division one, but a successful conquest over Saint-Louis would be a huge step towards making the playoffs despite all the turbulence they’ve had to endure. Samuel Poulin has shown flashes of brilliance under centre with the help of his leading receiver Samuel Filteau, but the offence as a whole needs to find more consistency in order to counterbalance the efforts made by their defence to keep them in games. Their not so secret weapon has been Elliot Capistran at running back, who’s been able to be a real threat in both facets of the game with 483 totals yards and five rushing touchdowns on the year, so definitely watch for him to factor in early with his touches increasing on what seems to be a weekly basis. Their defence should also be a tough puzzle for Saint-Louis to solve with seven guys getting to the quarterback this year, and Lowensky Junior Louis in particular has had a standout season with 37.5 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions.

Saint-Louis are coming off a crushing loss as well, but they literally got crushed 45-10 by the Blizzard, and they can’t afford to let that game stick around in their head because after Laval, they end the season with two CFC50 matchups versus Curé-Antoine-Labelle and Roger-Comtois. That’s promising for the other teams fighting at the bottom of the table, but for Saint-Louis it means they should probably secure a third victory on the year when they still have a realistic chance, and by knocking off Laval it’d create a nice two game cushion that could end up clinching them a playoff spot even if they don’t grab any points in the final two weeks. They’ve really struggled to get the running game to work at full capacity, but they do have one of the best receiver tandems in Cédrick Paradis and William Tremblay, who’ve combined for 743 yards, four touchdowns and 62 receptions from their pivot Félix Lacasse.

Saturday, October 14th at 1:30pm
CFC50 Triolet v.s Collège Jean-Eudes
Triolet were riding a three game winning streak before running into the Loups last week, but it’ll be vital for them to get back in the win column with just four points separating the top five teams in the division. On the other end of the table Collège Jean-Eudes still just need any type of win to keep their playoff hopes alive, which are slipping away as each week passes and the zero remains next to their name.

William Legault will be spearheading the Harfangs attack under centre as always, and he’ll be looking to use his favourite touchdown maker Thierry De Champlain to get some points on the board early. De Champlain has been incredible catching 7 touchdowns on just 16 receptions to go along with 398 yards, so while he may not be the go to guy between the 20s, always expect him to be in on the action when Triolet need some points in a hurry. Mathieu Bernard is the one who usually does the damage en route to scoring territory with a team high 26 catches and 455 yards, and when you factor in guys like Jean-Christophe Dion, you realize why Legault has been able to pass for the second most yards in the province. He’s also been able to rush for the fourth most rushing yards with 499 and four touchdowns, so it may be a far fetched proposition for Collège Jean-Eudes to keep Legault contained.

This is because defence hasn’t been their strongest suit allowing a league high 198 points, but they did find some success versus CFC50 Roger-Comtois a few weeks back that they could use as a source of inspiration. Julian Nelson and Quoc Thien Ho have been stalwarts on a defence that’ve struggled with consistency, but they’ll need to buckle down with the playoffs approaching and a friendly schedule that creates a realistic shot for them to snag the final spot. The offence will be led by the receiving duo of Vincent Beauregard and Maxime Lapierre, while Alexandre Gravel in the backfield should be a threat if they can keep this game close for four quarters.

Saturday, October 14th at 1:30pm
Collège Notre-Dame v.s CFC50 Séminaire Saint-François
We head to another battle between the top and bottom of the division, which is creating some very interesting scenarios as Séminaire Saint-François look to keep pace with undefeated Curé-Antoine-Labelle for top seed, while Notre-Dame are hoping to turn around a rocky start by stealing one of the final playoff spots.

In all honesty, this likely isn’t going to be the game Notre-Dame wins in order to jump into the postseason, but it could be used as the perfect tuneup for their final two games which come against Collège Jean-Eudes and Collège Laval, who are both also sitting on the outside looking in heading into this week. It’s gonna take a massive effort from their passing game in order to right the ship after a string of lacklustre performances, which would alleviate some pressure off Antoine Vaqué and Basel Elaghoury who’ve combined for 128 carries and 617 yards.

That’ll be the main focus for the Blizzard’s defence, while on offence they’ll also be looking to cram the ball down the Cactus’ throats with CFC100 Kalenga Muganda leading the charge. Muganda has rushed for a league high 1137 yards and scored 18 touchdowns in just six games, so of course the offence is going to flow through him early while Xavier Lavoie picks his spots in order to inflict the most damage possible. Lavoie has thrown 11 touchdowns to just three interceptions this year which is exactly the type of ball security they’ve needed out of the young pivot, plus Etienne Landry has been able to be as reliable as they come in the receiving corps with 28 catches for 403 yards. The Blizzard have been a machine this year with a point differential of 205, so I don’t expect much to change this week up against a desperate side from Notre-Dame.

Saturday, October 14th at 1:30pm
CFC50 Curé-Antoine-Labelle v.s CFC50 Roger-Comtois
The only contest of the week that features two of the top teams is between Curé-Antoine-Labelle and Roger-Comtois, which could become a very telling game down the line when it comes to playoff seeding.

The Loups head in as the favourites after annihilating Triolet – but they entered that game coming off a close call against CFC50 Saint-Jean-Eudes – so really there’s no telling which way this one will break even if they’re expected to win. CFC100 Xavier Tremblay had a fantastic week with 336 yards and four touchdowns, plus he had some new weapons step up in John-Nicky Giraud and Andrew Emmanuel Dauphin who helped lead the way, so this offence just keeps getting better and better as the weeks fly by. Another massive cog in their attack is Anthony Renault who’s second only to Muganda with 763 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, so not only do you need to be concerned with the pass when you face the Loups, but the running game as well.

The Patriotes deploy a similar two pronged attacked that keeps defences guessing all game, and they’ve been able to do so with probably the best backfield tandem in the province with Gabriel Auclair and Franck Cesar Tchembe splitting carries. They’ve combined for 937 yards and seven touchdowns on the year, which has been the perfect compliment to Allan Tremblay under centre who’s thrown 10 touchdowns and 875 yards through the air, while Gabriel Loiselle and Maxime Brousseau have led the receiving corps with four touchdowns apiece. Gabriel Bélanger will be the third option with nine receptions for 139 yards and three touchdowns, so they definitely have the talent to keep pace, and a win over Curé-Antoine-Labelle would throw a massive plot twist into the top of the division that really doesn’t need anymore drama.

Saturday, October 14th at 7:30pm
Académie les Estacades v.s CFC50 Saint-Jean-Eudes
Our final game in the top division pits Saint-Jean-Eudes versus Estacades, which could turn out to be an interesting matchup with Estacades’ defence stepping their schemes up significantly since last facing a CFC50 opponent.

The competition hasn’t been as fierce of course with their last three games coming against teams with losing records, but still there’s something to say about a defence who`s allowed just 17 points in 12 quarters of football after a fuzzy start to the year. Estacades will need their offence to match the tempo however with a league low 43 points, so it’ll be essential for either Anthony Rosa under centre or Olivier Audet in the backfield to help their defence out a little bit with some scoring support. They can’t ask much more from Alex Lafrance who’s been a freak on both sides of the field with 27 tackles, 5 interceptions, 23 receptions, 374 total yards and two touchdowns, so needless to say he’ll play a big role as always whether they win or lose this one.

The Condors are in a position to create some separation if Roger-Comtois loses, so they won’t come out looking to rest on an early lead because with the way the playoff picture in shaping up, no team can afford to lose a game right now. They came so close to knocking off the Loups two weeks ago which musta been a big confidence booster even if they ended up on the losing end, and they’ll need the boost because they’ll pretty be in gut check mode for the rest of 2017 with games against Roger-Comtois and Triolet to cap off their schedule before heading into the playoffs. Jérome Rancourt will need to have a big performance down the stretch in order to get Saint-Jean-Eudes the best possible seeding, but he’s going to need a ton of help from guys like Theo Boutin, Louis-David Bernier-Courtier, Vincent Robitaille, Cedric Leroux, Antoine Noel and Nathan Gauthier to get it done. By the way, the Condors have a lot of resources at their disposal, so don’t be surprised if they get hot and create some noise deep into November.

Division 1/b

Friday, October 13th at 7:00pm
Collège Charles-Lemoyne v.s La Courvilloise
Charles-Lemoyne come into this game chasing Saint-Stanislas for first place, meanwhile La Courvilloise are looking to chase down Pointe-Lévy for the final playoff spot, so there’s a lot on the line, but possibly a discrepancy in talent. Gabriel Cyr-Dandurand has been putting up some unreal numbers at quarterback for Charles-Lemoyne completing 45/75 passes for 661 yards and seven touchdowns, while at the same time leading the division with 837 yards on 55 carries with 11 touchdowns along the ground. That’s an insanely efficient statline, which will be tough to match for La Courvilloise who’ll be relying on Camil Gilot to carry the load alongside Dominique Giguere in the backfield.

Friday, October 13th at 7:00pm
Jacques-Rousseau v.s Armand-Corbeil
The string of bad luck continues for Jacques-Rousseau who are still searching for their first victory of 2017, while on the opposite sideline Armand Corbeil is trying to avoid slipping into a battle for the final playoff spot. Olivier Cool has lived up to his name for Armand-Corbeil sitting in third with 423 receiving yards, and Xavier Dupont has been the driving for Jacques-Rousseau with 384 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

Friday, October 13th at 7:30pm
Polyvalente Deux-Montagnes v.s Pointe-Lévy
With a game in hand, Pointe-Lévy are hoping to take a huge step in the standings with a win over a 4-2 outfit from Deux-Montagnes. Pointe-Lévy have been one of the hottest programs in the province with Simon Giguere leading the way with 781 receiving yards, while Deux-Montagnes has also been on a bit of a streak with Ricardo Mutombo leading their receiving corps.

Saturday, October 14th at 7:00pm
Collège de Lévis v.s Saint-Stanislas
Saint-Stanislas answered their first loss of the year with a huge bounce back week, but they now know they have no time to rest especially against a sneaky squad like Collège de Lévis. Xavier Belisle and Terry Ferguson have been tremendous for Saint-Stanislas throughout the season, while Collège de Lévis has depended on the trio of Hubert-Chalhoub-Plante, Dominic Tanguay and Zacharie Baron-Beliveau to help secure a pair of wins.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
