CFC50 Rankings Week 5: Drama at the top as three top 10 programs tumble

You want chaos? You want drama? You want madness?

Well you’ve come to the right place because the CFC50 High School Rankings have gone through a transformation after a wild week of action across the country.

Three top ten teams have tumbled down the rankings including St. Thomas More out of Hamilton, who lost their first regular season game in six years. At this point you’re probably expecting us to announce it was Newman who finally found a way past their rivals, but instead it was their Stoney Creek neighbours at Bishop Ryan who pulled off the upset of the week. It took overtime to decide this barnburner with the Celtics hitting a last minute field goal in regulation, and at that point there would be no stopping the oncoming train as Bishop Ryan prevailed 34-33. The shocking result sets up a juicy matchup this week between the Stoney Creek rivals with Newman putting their 3-0 record on the line at Bishop Ryan on Friday afternoon. Could it finally be the year of the Cardinal? Or can the Celtics make it a three horse race for the coveted Hamilton Catholic title? Stay tuned because things just got very interesting in Steeltown.

Down the highway in London we had another eye-popping result with Catholic Central dropping their first regular season contest to St. Thomas Aquinas by a score of 19-14. The Flames have always been contenders in the tough London District conference, and they’ve now staked their claim as the best team in the region. They’ll likely have to deal with Laurier eventually, who are looking like the class of the TVDSB Central conference, but you truly never know who’s going to rise to the top in London each season.

Our final top ten program to fall this week was G.W. Graham, who took BC by storm last season winning their first provincial title, but Vancouver College were too much to handle taking home a massive 28-23 victory to kickoff their regular season campaign. The Irish have looked dominant throughout the preseason, and will be hungry to flip the script from last year where they looked like the favourites as well, but then ended up collapsing in the playoffs against underdogs Centennial.

The top ten wasn’t the only place for upsets with the Halton public region shaking up the hierarchy as Garth Webb defeated the defending league champions Oakville Trafalgar by a score of 21-20, while Nelson weren’t able to find a way past Iroquois Ridge falling 26-23. You really can’t predict much from these two matchups with each game coming down to the wire, which means we should have an exciting race to the finish line with no clear favourite emerging out of the gates. On the other side of the bracket it’s been status quo in the Halton Catholic region with Holy Trinity and Corpus Christi taking care of business, which is setting up a must-see showdown between the two programs on October 19th. We can’t wait for the GHAC playdowns this year between the Hamilton Catholic and Halton regions. Your guess is as good as ours when it comes to predicting the final four programs.

Another province writing a dramatic script this season is Quebec, where Armand-Corbeil threw a wrench into the storyline defeating Saint-Jean-Eudes by a score of 24-17 to improve their record to 3-2. After cruising through their first four games, Seminaire-Saint-Francois finally found some resistance against College Notre-Dame, but in the end they still found a way to get the job done with a 23-14 victory over the defending champs. Our other top ten program Charles-Lemoyne also found themselves in a hard-fought contest against Academie Saint-Louis, but they were able to keep their undefeated record in tact triumphing 29-14. If you can follow the bouncing ball, Saint-Jean-Eudes have lost to Armand-Corbeil, who lost to College Notre-Dame, who lost to Academie Saint-Louis, who lost to Saint-Jean-Eudes … did you catch all of that? We didn’t even mention Cure-Antoine-Labelle, who currently sit tied in third place with a 3-2 record. It’s razor thin margins between 3rd-6th place in Juvenile DI, and we wouldn’t put it past any of them pulling off an upset over one of our top ten programs down the road. Meanwhile, we’ve got a giant circle around October 15th on the calendar when Seminaire Saint-Francois and Charles Lemoyne finally meet between the lines.

CFC100 CLASS OF 2024 RANKINGS

We were highly anticipating the matchup between Miller and Riffel in Regina, but the Marauders weren’t going to get caught up in any drama with an easy 42-9 win over the Royals. They’ve proven they are worthy of the second place ranking on the national list, and at this point it’s looking like the top program out of Saskatoon will have the best chance at ending their reign as the team to beat in Saskatchewan. Will it be Holy Cross or St. Joseph’s? We will have a much better idea next week with the two powerhouse programs ready to faceoff on Friday night.

The rest of our ranked programs found little issues bypassing the competition this week, and we’d like to make a special mention to W.F. Herman out of Windsor, who are back in the thick of things with their victory over L’Essor after having their season cancelled last year. The high school football landscape is a better place when the Windsor region is competing.
