The countdown begins to CanadaFootballChat.com’s Ontario Prospect Challenge (OPC) on the April 29th weekend at Tim Horton’s Field in Hamilton. In the days leading up to the OPC, CFC will preview the teams and the players participating in the big event.
When Corey Griffin suits up for Team West Grade 8, he will be using the opportunity to learn a little more about where he stands in regards to his football skill set.
Griffin decided to take part in the Ontario Prospects Challenge after it was recommended to him by a player who took part in the Challenge the year before. He is excited to play with very competitive and athletic athletes.
The young defensive tackle stands at 6’1, 197lbs. In 2012, he played with the Forest City Thunderbirds (Ontario Football Conference). In the same year, he was elected to the London All-Star team. He has also played in the London Minor Football Association.
When asked why he likes playing as a defensive tackle, Griffin said, “Being able to use my speed and strength to stop the offence from gaining any yards.”
The OPC will take place at Tim Hortons Field, the home of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Griffin said playing here will simply add to his adrenaline. He plans on using his experience to stay calm when the pressure begins to mount.
Griffin will be graduating in 2020. “My goals are to stay in shape and develop on and off the field. I would love to play in university,” he said. He adds he hasn’t considered which school yet because it is pretty far away.
For this OPC, Griffin said his goals as to make strong tackles and sacks so he can help the defence. “Playing at this level will show me where my strengths and weaknesses are,” he said.
Griffin added that the goal for the team is to “play as a team and hopefully succeed as a team.”
