Tailback Ashton Dickson of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men is the Atlantic University Sport football offensive player of the week for the week ending Sept. 7, 2014.

Dickson, a 5-foot-9, fourth-year arts student from Ottawa, Ont. lead all X-Men rushers with 161 yards on 23 carries in StFX’s 31-7 victory over Saint Mary’sΒ FridayΒ night to open the AUS season.

Averaging 7.0 yards per carry, Dickson also had two receptions in the game for 174 all-purpose yards. He scored the X-Men’s second touchdown of the game in the second quarter to give StFX a 16-0 lead en route to their first victory at Huskies Stadium since 1998.

Linebacker Matt Montgomery of the Mount Allison Mounties is the Atlantic University Sport football defensive player of the week.

A fourth-year psychology student from Oakville, Ont., Montgomery played an integral part of the Mounties’ defence as Mount Allison held the Acadia Axemen to 12 points inSaturday’sΒ 20-12 victory to open their AUS season.

Montgomery recorded nine total tackles – seven solo and four assisted. His stats also included a tackle for a loss of two yards as well as two pass breakups.

Defensive back Charlton Elliot of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men is the Atlantic University Sport football special teams player of the week.

A fourth-year arts student in his fifth year of eligibility, Elliot blocked two punts inΒ FridayΒ night’s 31-7 victory over Saint Mary’s, resulting in forced fumbles which the X-Men recovered. His blocked punt early in the third quarter was recovered for a touchdown to give the X-Men a 26-4 lead.

The 6-foot-0 Pickering, Ont. native also registered one punt return for 24 yards and had one tackle.

In his first career game at the university level, the Rouge et Or quarterback Hugo Richard (Mechanical Engineering) completed 74% of his passes (23 for 31) for 371 yards and three touchdowns. Against a tough opponent in the Montreal Carabins, Richard also ran 8 times for 26 yards and a touchdown.

Dempsey Jutras (Multidisciplinary) forced two major turnovers, one with a tackle for loss on a 3rd down and short with the McGill Redmen at midfield and the other a forced fumble as the opponents were threatening to tie the game in the fourth quarter. He finished his day with five solo tackles and three assisted tackles for a total of 6.5, in addition to four tackles for losses for 12 yards and a forced fumble.

Kicker Keegan Treloar (Marketing) excelled both on field goals and kickoffs converting four of his five field goal attempts (24, 29, 35 and 30 yards) in addition to maintaining an average of 57.2 yards on four kickoffs. He scored 13 of his team’s 25 points in the win.

OUA POW Week 2 2014

OUA:

HAMILTON – The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Players of the Week for the period ending September 8, 2014.

OFFENCE: Derek Wendel (Belleville, Ont.) – 3rdΒ yr. – Ottawa

Going up against the ninth-ranked team in Canada, Wendel put together an incredible afternoon and led the Gee-Gees to a come-from-behind upset of the Queen’s Gaels.

Wendel threw for 401 yards, three touchdowns, completed 35/52 of his pass attempts, and rushed for 104 yards; the 35 completions were second most in school history.

The Gee-Gees trailed Queen’s by 14 in the fourth quarter, but scored 21 unanswered points en route to a 37-30 victory.

Wendel is now averaging 371 passing yards per game as the Gee-Gees sit tied for first in the conference at 2-0.

DEFENCE: Brendan Morgan (Pickering, Ont.) – 3rdΒ yr. – Queen’s

Despite losing to the Ottawa Gee-Gees, Morgan recorded game highs with 10 solo and 11.5 total tackles. Morgan now ranks sixth in the CIS in tackles, and will need another strong performance in Week 3 when the archrival Western Mustangs come to Kingston.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Ryan Nieuwesteeg (Niagara Falls, Ont.) – 3rdΒ yr. – Guelph

With his team trailing 18-17 against the underdog Toronto Varsity Blues, Ryan Nieuwesteeg returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown, and changed the complexion of the game as Guelph scored 33 unanswered points in an eventual 50-18 blowout.

On the afternoon, the third-year Niagara Falls native returned nine punts for 175 yards; an average of 19.4 yards per return.

CWUAA POW Week 1 2014

Canada West:

Calgary Dinos SB Blaszko registered 198 receiving yards and a touchdown in 71-3 win over Alberta

NEW WESTMINSTER, BC – The opening weekend of the 2014 Canada West football season saw the Calgary Dinos, Saskatchewan Huskies and Regina Rams come out of the gates with strong opening statements.

Brett Blaszko (Calgary), Mark Ingram (Saskatchewan) and Andrew Fabian (Regina) have been selected the Canada West Football Players of the Week for leading their respective teams in Week 1.

OFFENCE: #89 Brett Blaszko, Slotback (Calgary)Β 

Third-year receiver Brett Blaszko was a key cog in the offensive juggernaut of the University of Calgary Dinos that annihilated the Alberta Golden Bears 71-3 to open Canada West competition this weekend.

The Burlington, Ont. native hauled in nine passes for a whopping 198 yards, punctuated by a gorgeous 65-yard TD catch from Andrew Buckley. The 2012 Canada West rookie of the year, Blaszko averaged 22 yards per reception and sits atop the national leaderboard in receiving yards per game.

Blaszko and the No. 2-ranked Dinos, in search of a seventh consecutive Canada West championship, head to Vancouver this weekend to take on the UBC ThunderbirdsΒ SaturdayΒ afternoon.

DEFENCE: #6 Mark Ingram, Safety (Saskatchewan)

University of Saskatchewan safety Mark Ingram solidified the Huskies 44-24 season opening win over the Manitoba Bisons snaring two interceptions in the second half.

The fifth-year Agriculture & Bioresources student forced the first turnover with three minutes left in the third quarter intercepting the ball at the Manitoba 44 yard line. His second interception of the game came with just under two minutes left in the fourth quarter. Ingram nabbed the ball at the Saskatchewan 43 returning it 25 yards. The play led to a Saskatchewan touchdown.

Ingram, a 2013 CIS All-Canadian, also led the Huskies with 5.5 tackles in the game.

The No. 10 Saskatchewan travels to Edmonton to meet the Alberta Golden BearsΒ Saturday.

SPECIAL TEAMS: #71 Andrew Fabian (Regina)

University of Regina kicker Andrew Fabian was perfect in his Rams debutΒ on FridayΒ night, hitting all four of his field goal attempts to help his team to a 33-23 win over No.7-ranked UBC at Mosaic Stadium.

Fabian hit from 40, 36, 34, and 18 yards for the Rams and was also a perfect 3-for-3 on point-after attempts to score a game-high 15 points.

Fabian also handled punting duties for the Rams, finishing with an average of 40.3 yards per attempt including a key 37-yard punt late in the game that forced UBC to start on its own 7-yard line trailing by seven points with just under two minutes left in the game.
