CIS RECORD WATCH: McMaster’s Crapigna closing in on field goal mark

OTTAWA – The first seven weeks of the CIS football season have been highlighted by some remarkable performances and a number of star players could add their name to the national record book by the time the regular schedule comes to an end, on November 1^st.

Here’s a look at some players to keep an eye on this weekend and over the next few weeks.

CAREER FIELD GOALS

With two conference games remaining in his career, McMaster kicker Tyler Crapigna, who already holds the all-time OUA record of 79 field goals, needs four more to break the CIS standard of 82 set by former Sherbrooke standout William Dion (2008-2012). The Marauders host Laurier Saturday at 1 p.m.

Laval’s Boris Bede and Calgary’s Johnny Mark, both in their fourth year of eligibility, are tied for 11^th place on the CIS career list with 61 field goals.

Crapigna and Guelph’s Daniel Ferraro enter the weekend as the 2014 CIS leaders with 19 field goals apiece. The single-season CIS record of 25 was set in 2008 by Laval’s Christopher Milo, while the OUA mark of 22 is shared by Western’s Lirim Hajrullahu (2013) and McMaster’s Michael Ray (2003).

Crapigna is also tied for fourth place in CIS history with 385 career points. The CIS and OUA record of 422 is held by Western’s Lirim Hajrullahu (2009-2013).

Mark is also in the CIS top 10, in ninth place, with 355 career points. He is only two shy of the Canada West of 357 mark set by Jamie Boreham, who suited up for UBC (1996), Saskatchewan (1999) and Manitoba (2001-2003).

While he should not threaten the CIS career record of 87 touchdown passes held by Saint Mary’s legend Chris Flynn (1987-1990), fifth-year Windsor quarterback Austin Kennedy has a good shot at the OUA mark of 79 set by Ottawa’s Josh Sacobie (2004-2008), which is also the second-highest tally in CIS history. With two conference games left in his career, Kennedy currently ranks fifth on the CIS list with 75.

Kennedy could also become the fourth pivot in CIS history to reach the 10,000-yard plateau by the end of league play. He is currently eighth on the all-time list with 9,414 yards through the air in his university career.

SINGLE-SEASON RUSHING YARDS

With two games left on Laurier’s regular season schedule, Golden Hawks running back Dillon Campbell ranks 37^th on the all-time CIS list for most rushing yards in a single campaign, with 1,132. While the CIS and OUA record of 1,816 yards set in 2004 by McMaster’s Jesse Lumsden seems out of reach, Campbell should easily crack the CIS top 10 (1,329 yards) by the time conference play is over and, given his average of 189 yards per contest so far this fall, has a very realistic shot at the top five (1,464).
