Clan earn first GNAC road win in school history in wild game at Dixie State (VIDEO)

St. George, UT ā€“ The Simon Fraser University football team won their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference road game in school history, winning an offensive battle in Utah on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Dixie State College Red Storm 58-47.

“I’m proud of our kids, they played a full four quarters in a tough enviroment,” said head coach Dave Johnson.Ā Ā “This is a tough road trip and a tough stadium to perform well in but our guys did.”

Trey Wheeler (Seattle, WA) completed 36 of 54 passes in the game, throwing for 482 yards and six touchdowns.Ā Ā His six touchdown passes was a GNAC single game record for a quarterback.

Lemar Durant (Coquitlam, BC) came within eight yards of matching a Great Northwest Athletic Conference record for most receiving yards in a game, as he wrapped up with 228 yards on 12 catches with four touchdowns.

Bo Palmer (North Vancouver, BC) found the endzone twice, rushing for 99 yards on 26 carries.

The Clan defence put pressure on Dixie State quarterback Griff Robles all day, sacking the Red Storm quartback five times.

“Their quarterback is big, strong and fast.Ā Ā He gave our defence some problems but they were there for us when we needed them.Ā Ā Offensively we controlled the ball well.Ā Ā Our offence was balanced, Trey (Wheeler) did a good job and our offensive line didn’t give up a sack.Ā Ā I’m happy with how we played, earning a tough road win,” finished Johnson.

Casey Chin (Port Moody, BC) led the Clan defence with six and a half tackles.

After trading touchdowns in the first quarter, both offences caught fire and erupted for a combined 48 points in the second.

The Clan scored 28 of the 48 points in the second quarter, thanks in large part to three touchdowns from Durant, but it was Dixie State that opened the scoring.

In the Clan red zone, DSC quarterback Robles found Mitch Frei with a six yard pass for the touchdown to give Dixie State the lead.Ā Ā The Clan blocked the extra point attempt, limiting the damage as DSC led 13-7.

On their next possession, the Clan responded, as Wheeler capped a five play, 71 yard drive with a 10 yard touchdown pass to Durant, and Tiernan Docherty (Richmond, BC) converted the extra point to give the Clan a 14-13 lead.

After forcing the Red Storm to go three and out on their next drive, the Clan added to their lead, capitalizing on a strong 17 yard punt return from Earl Anderson (Ajax, ON) as SFU completed a 44 yard drive when Wheeler found Jamal Kett (Orangeville, ON) with a five yard pass in the end zone to make it 21-13 Clan.

Robles answered back with another touchdown for DSC but the Red Storm were unsuccessful on the two point conversion, keeping the Clan in front, 21-19.

Wheeler and Durant continued their dominance after that, as the two connected on a 73 yard pass for a touchdown and a 27 yard pass for a touchdown to put the Clan in front, 35-19.

Dixie answered in the final minute of the half, and this time converted on the two point convert, sending the teams to the locker rooms with the Clan in front 35-27.

The scoring slowed down in the third quarter but on the final play, DSC quarterback Robles scampered 24 yards to the SFU four yard line, setting up a four yard touchdown pass to Frei, and a two point conversion afterwards, to tie the score at 35 early in the final quarter.

SFU gained the upper hand first, when Wheeler found Kett with a 37 yard pass for the touchdown, but SFU could not convert the extra point, making the score 41-35.

On the ensuing Dixie State drive, Keynan Parker (Coquitlam, BC) forced a fumble that led to another SFU score when Durant hauled in a 12-yard pass from Wheeler for his fourth touchdown of the day, a score that would prove to be the game winner for the Clan.

SFU added another touchdown and returned a blocked extra point attempt for a safety while DSC scored two more touchdowns, making the final 58-47 for the Clan, an 11 point victory.

With the win, the Clan improve to 4-5 on the season, 3-5 in GNAC play.

The Clan will return to Burnaby Mountain to host first place Humboldt State in their final home game of the 2012 season, next Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
