Clan fall to Division I Idaho State

The Simon Fraser Clan football team traveled south to play Division I opponent Idaho State in non-conference play Saturday, falling 66-14.
SFU looked to start things off with a bang, as Earl Anderson (Courtice, ON) returned the opening kickoff 60-yards to the Idaho State 33 yard line, however a holding penalty would negate the return.

Idaho State went early and often to its passing game, as quarterback Justin Arias threw for 321 yards and four touchdowns in the first half, while the ground game added another two scores in the opening 30 minutes.

The Clan offence was led by receivers Lemar Durant (Coquitlam, BC), who hauled in nine receptions for 94 yards, and Justin Buren (Coquitlam, BC) who had a touchdown on five receptions for 92 yards.

SFU would get on the board in the second half, as Ryan Stanford (Phoenix, AZ) entered the game at quarterback and orchestrated a 12 play 75 yard drive capped off by a 25-yard touchdown pass to Buren.

Than late in the fourth quarter, Stanford would punch it in from a yard out after another 75 yard drive that spanned nine plays.

Stanford would finish 16-of-22 for 190 yards, while Anderson ended with 199 all-purpose yards on nine touches.

On defence, linebacker Jordan Herdman (Winnipeg, MB) finished with a game high 17 tackles, while defensive end’s Jamie Puffer and Kristian Lawrence each had two tackles-for-a-loss.

With the loss, the Clan’s record falls to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

The team will now return home after four straight road games, to host the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers.

Kickoff on October 18 will be at 1 p.m. at Swangard Stadium. For ticket information email [email protected].
