Nova Scotia offensive lineman receives offer from NCAA Division 1’s Brown Bears
Jon Harvey went down to Brown University to attend the Bears Skills Football Camp.
What happened afterwards for the 6’4, 270 pound offensive lineman from Halifax, Nova Scotia was totally unexpected.
“I received my verbal offer at the end of the Brown Football Skills Camp,” recalled Harvey of receiving his first NCAA offer. “Brown thought I was going into my senior season so they were going to make me an offer for the fall of 2015.”
“But since I’m only going into my junior year, Brown has just given me a verbal offer as of now.”
Currently, Harvey is playing for St. Andrew’s College Saints of the Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA). Previous to the Saints, Harvey suited up for the Citadel Phoenix of the Nova Scotia Student Athletic Federation Football League (NSSAFFL), the Halifax Argos of the Nova Scotia Indoor Spring League (NSISL) and the Timberlea Titans.
While he is thrilled that he has received his first NCAA Division 1 offer, it is not lost on him the support and encouragement of several individuals on and off the field.
“I’m really excited and privileged of getting this offer,” expressed Harvey. I think it’s just a compliment to the great coaching I’ve received.”
“Being at powerhouses like Citadel and St. Andrew’s College has made this all possible. I’d like to thank my coaches and my family.”
Saints Head Coach Len Gurr is not surprised by the news of Harvey’s first NCAA offer due to his character as well as his tremendous abilities on the gridiron and in the classroom.
“Jon is not only a tremendously talented big man with an exceptional work ethic, he is also one of the top students at our school,” commented Gurr. “This rare combination of athletic and academic excellence makes him an ideal recruit for Ivy League schools.”
“This past season was his first year playing offensive line on a full-time basis, and with two more years remaining at St. Andrew’s, the best is still yet to come for Jon.”
With Harvey’s recent success south of the border, it continues a tradition of excellence demonstrated by players in the Saints football program.
“We continue to be extremely proud of the many student athletes from our football program who earn NCAA and CIS offers due to their talent, hard work, and dedication to their teammates and our football program,” said Gurr. “Our top student athletes are young men of great ability and character and to see so many NCAA coaches continue to pursue our players is a source of great pride for all of us.”
