DL/OL Gary Ghag is more than impressive

Lineman Gary Ghag has been playing football for the past 6 years.

He says “To me, football is a lifestyle. The second I put on that helmet, I am a part of a unit much bigger than myself, and a part of a team where everyone gives their all and we all share a common goal. Also, it is the only time where I’m praised for being ruthlessly aggressive.”

Currently playing for the W.J Mouat Hawks, this impressive player is a force to be reckoned with. Standing at 6’3 and 260lbs, his favorite part about his position is the physicality. He says, “No other position gets to go out every play and hit. Also, the importance of the line, no offence can function without it.”

For Gary, his game play has been modelled after Baltimore Ravens linemen Marshall Yanda, because of his sheer aggression and power. He also takes notes from Dallas Cowboys offensive tackle, Tyron Smith“……simply because he is so fundamentally sound.”

Game day for Gary includes eating his favorite pregame meal of pasta and chicken breast, listening to his favorite song, “Burn it to the ground” by Nickelback and then laying on a bench and focusing on what he needs to be doing in the game. Sounds like a winning pre-game combo to me.

Being the player he is hasn’t come without some strong support. When he was asked who the most influential people are in his life the answer was easy; it’s his brother.

“Jason is very influential to me. We are extremely close, I feel like he knows me better than myself sometimes. He is the entire reason I play football. He introduced me to the sport, and pushed me to be great, and always motivated me. Without him, I wouldn’t be where I am today. He’s a great man and I look up to him. Every play I’m on the field is for him. We’re hoping to play for the same university next year.”

Taking football to the next level is something Gary is looking forward to doing.

“I believe I can adjust well to the next level. I know the level of commitment is high, and I believe I will be able to balance my studies and football.”

During the off season, he has plans to “keep healthy, work on my strength, speed, and agility, along with keeping my technique and fundamentals sound.”

As of yet, Gary hasn’t committed to any team, but his top three choices are UBC, Saskatchewan and St.Fx. He hopes to play U Sports football and study World History, to one day realize his dream of becoming a history teacher, passing on knowledge to the next generation.
