Football Canada Cup: Day 1 game predictions

The national Under-18 championship, the Football Canada Cup (FCC), starts tomorrow in London, Ontario.  All games are being played at Western Universities TD Waterhouse Stadium.

Since reformatting to the U-18 age category in 2010, Team Quebec has been the most dominant team, winning the 2011 FCC and coming 2nd in 2010 to Saskatchewan.  This is how we see the day one games unfolding.

Sunday July 15th, 2012 – Game Day 1

Game 1 – Nova Scotia (7) vs. Alberta (2) @ 10:00 pm

Experience versus youth.  Alberta has 8 returning players from their silver medal performance in 2011 and Nova Scotia has three from their 8th place finishing team last year.  Nova Scotia upset Alberta in their return to the FCC in 2010, their only win since returning to the Football Canada Cup.  Can the maritimers pull off the upset this year?  No Jesse Mills, Kadeem Adams, Adam Melanson, or Jacob Leblanc on this team.

Alberta 25 Nova Scotia 7

Game 2 – New Brunswick (8) vs. Québec (1) @ 1:00 pm

Welcome back to the FCC New Brunswick.  Your prize for that return is to face Team Quebec in the first round.  Rumour is this may be Quebec’s strongest team since the new age format.  If this is half-true it does not bode well for the team from Canada’s only officially bilingual province.  If NB could forge Josh Sacobie, Jake Thomas and Mike Miller’s driver’s license they may have a chance.  RB Fred Hammond will need 25 carries in this one for his team to be successful.

Quebec 43 New Brunswick 6

Game 3 – Ontario East (5) vs. Saskatchewan (4) @ 4:00 pm

This game could come down to Special Teams, as this may be the most closely contested contest of day 1.  Ontario East has strength at the QB position, and if they can protect them in the pocket, they should have a good day.  Saskatchewan always competes well against Team Ontario East, and Sunday should be no different.

Saskatchewan 24 Ontario East 22

Game 4 – Manitoba (6) vs. Ontario West (3) @ 7:00 pm

No Tyler Varga;  No Brett Weir;  No Will Finch; but this may be Ontario West’s year.  Will have the best back-end in the tournament.  Production at the QB position will be imperative for this teams success.  Traditionally slow starters, if Ontario West can get to the final we like their chances.  Manitoba always has some strong players and may have had the best front 7 in the tournament in 2010.  Offensive production has been the Achilles heal in year’s past, and this year may be no different.

Ontario West 19 Manitoba 10
