Football Canada Cup Day 3 game predictions (all 4 games): Quebec to win gold?

Here are the Football Canada Cup day 3 game predictions. We managed a 4-0 record (again) on day 2, bringing our record to 8-0 overall. We are confident we will end the tournament above .500 :).

Day 2 saw some thrilling matches. The Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan game and the Manitoba, Ontario East game went down to the last seconds. Ontario West held on for a while until Alberta pulled away in the 4th quarter. British Columbia played tough against a talented Quebec team but could not come through in the end.

Game 9 – Nova Scotia vs. Ontario East @ 10:00 am (7th & 8th – Consolation)

Both teams are 0 and 2 and both teams are struggling with some injury issues. Both Quarterbacks, Ontario East’s Nick Gorgichuk and Nova Scotia’s Matthew Shannon had solid games in the second day of tournament play. With the injuries to the Nova Scotia defensive line and the talent on the Ontario East offensive line this game could be won on this match up alone. Ontario East has moved the ball but have yet to get enough ‘big plays’ to win a game. The special teams have been a problem. Nova Scotia played well against Saskatchewan but some timely errors late in the game nullified the W. Ontario East defense must stop the boot pass, Nova Scotia’s top play. Nova Scotia has some talent in the receiving core and one of the best punter / kickers in Chase Kodejs. This one will be close.

Game 10 – Saskatchewan vs. Manitoba @ 1:00 pm (5th & 6th – Consolation)

The “mini” or “amateur” banjo-bowl is ready to go. Manitoba has played tremendous defense in both games so far and the offense did enough against Ontario East. Running back Blair Mattes is getting better as this tournament progresses. Another big game from Mattes will be key for a Manitoba victory. The defensive line, led by Quinn Horton, must contain the running game of Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan running back Brandin Cannon, like his Manitoba counterpart, has gotten better as the tournament has progressed. Different style then Mattes, his speed and cuts may cause the big Front 7 of Manitoba some fits. QBs Jared Andreychuk and Jaeden Marwick both looked good in the game 2 victory. The defense will have to play well, especially against the run.

Game 11- Ontario West vs. British Columbia @ 4:00 pm (Bronze Medal)

In an interview with CFC, Ontario West head coach Rob Underhill spoke about one of their challenges in this game being managing injury. Losing 6+ players to injury over the course of the last 2 games has ‘hurt’. Will Finch, arguably one of the best class of 2012 QBs in the country, was the big loss. Can they score enough points against BC to compete? We think not.

British Columbia is coming off a disappointing loss to Quebec. Their goal was ‘bring home the gold’, and now that it is not attainable how will this team react? Terrell Davis, billed as the top RB coming into the tournament has not disappointed. While not posting the rushing numbers he and his offense may have wanted, he has put together great offensive numbers if you include pass receiving and returns. QB Jordan Deverill looked good against Quebec.

Game 12 – Alberta vs. Quebec @ 7:00 pm (Gold Medal)

After a disappointing 8th place finish a year ago the host province re-focused their provincial team efforts and it has shown. QB Matthew Bonaca has led the charge on offense. Receivers Colton Balicki and Mackenzie Meek have been his #1 targets. DB Rees Paterson and his secondary mates will have to bring their ‘A’ game in order to contend with the speed of the Quebec receiving core.

Quebec is the favourite. Both QBs, Guillaume Dumas & Hugo Richard, have been great in their time on the field. Running back by committee, led by Gabriel Parent, has been outstanding. The offensive line has been stellar, other than the holding penalties. The defense has been the most opportunistic of the tournament, especially the defensive backfield. LB Marc-Antoine Varin and DL Mathieu Betts have led the front seven in pressuring the QB and stopping the run.
