Football Quebec begins summer events this week

Montreal, July 2, 2013 –Ā Football Quebec’s Program of Excellence Excellence has 3 important events this week:

TheĀ 17thĀ edition of the Wilson Challenge:
Ā 
First on the Quebec scene this weekend is the opening kickoff of theĀ 17thĀ edition ofĀ theĀ Wilson ChallengeĀ  at Hebert Stadium in St. Leonard. In the annual championship, Football Quebec’s Program of Excellence hosts under-17 (MU17) and under-15 (MU15) players – some 900 most talented athletes and coaches will attend from the four corners of the province.

Eight regional team programsĀ (including the arrival of the Outaouais region) men’s under-15 category andĀ 8 teamsĀ (including the return of the Team Nova Scotia) in the men’s under-17 category will compete for top honors in one of the more prestigious and elite football tournaments elite Quebec. Ā 24 games in total will be played. Ā The tournament will commence at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 6 and will continue through Sunday, July 14 . Ā There will be 4 games per weekend day and two games each weeknight.

Last year, the championship finals of the Wilson Challenge resulted in two exicting games, which kept the audience in suspense until the last second, The Rive-Sud deĀ QuebecĀ won the under-15 category for the second year over the Montreal Metro while theĀ QBFL ElitesĀ (Quebec Bantam Football League) who were Silver medalist in 2011, won the under-17 category over Quebec Elites.

Again this year, the Alouettes will sponsor 16 teams in the tournament and attend a few Wilson Challenge games.

Team Quebec at the 2013 Football Canada Cup, beginning of the final roster selection camp:

Thereafter, the final stage of the selection process of the final roster for Team Quebec Men’s under-18 team and training camp will open Friday at 1:00 p.m. at theĀ Campus du Fort St- Jean, St-Jean sur RichelieuĀ and will continue until the start of the provincial team for the national championship on July 13. In this final camp,Ā 54 playersĀ will try to get a spot onĀ Team Quebec, while 14 players will be cut during the week while the final 40 players will take the road to the Football Canada Cup which is being played in Moncton this year, from July 15 to 21st, 2013. This year’s team will attempt to defend their two consecutive national titles in 2011 and 2012 and compete to win a third title in the Football Canada Cup tournament. Seven provinces in total will be participating this year.

The selection process began in March with three Adidas evaluation camps, which 400 players attended from across Quebec. It was followed by the selection camp June 1 and 2, which brought together one hundred of the best athletes that were evaluated this past spring.

Senior World Championship for Women (IFAF)
Ā 
The Canadian national team began its participation in the IFAF Senior Women’s World Championship (International Federation of American Football) in Vantaa, Finland at 20:00 hours. The Canadian team won silver two years ago in the tournament played in Sweden. Ā The team faced Spain in their opening match.

12 members of the current national team are from Quebec, mostly from the 2012 IWFL (International Women’s Football League) champions Montreal Blitz. Ā The Canadian attack is led by two Quebec coordinators: Ā FranƧois Candle (CollĆØge Jean-Eudes) on the offensive side and Pierre Migner (Montreal Blitz) on the defensive side. Following the match today, the Canadian women will face Finland Thursday, July 4 at 13:00 before starting the medal round Saturday at 6. Six countries are vying for the world title including the defending champions from the USA.
