Former Hurricane accepted to Westfield State University

Charlottetown, PE – Former Hurricanes Football player Thomas McCabe will be heading to Massachusetts this September to attend Westfield State University and play Division III football with the school’s team, the Owls.

McCabe, 21, who is a graduate from Holland College’s Sport and Leisure Management program, will study Exercise Science at Westfield State. The linebacker played for the Hurricanes for the past three years. In 2011 he won the Student Athlete of the Year award and in 2012 took home the team’s Community Service Award.

Hurricanes Football Club president Mike O’Grady said the team was pleased to hear that McCabe had been accepted.

“Westfield State is an outstanding school, and Thomas is an outstanding young man. We enjoyed having him as a student-athlete at Holland College, and we are delighted to learn that he will be able to continue to play football as he furthers his education,” he said.

McCabe said that his years playing with the ’Canes helped him to mature as a player.

“The three years I spent as a Hurricane were invaluable to me. I appreciate the opportunity I was given being able to play for the Hurricanes, it opened doors for my future,” he said. “I know that the experience will continue to serve me well when I put on the Owls jersey.”

The Hurricanes Football Club will hit the field for the season opener in Fredericton September 14. Their first home game is September 22 at 1 p.m. For more information about the team or to become a booster, visit hcfootball.ca.
