Fox 40 Prospect Challenge (West Coast): ATH Grunert following his own path

It’s not every day that you find someone who doesn’t have at least one sports hero or role model. ATH Stefan Grunert is one of these people.

“I strive to be myself and try not to follow in anyone’s footsteps but rather make my own,” he says.

For seven years now, Grunert has been playing the game he loves. Starting with the Peninsula Wildcats and now the Victoria Spartans, this young athlete is making his own mark. His 2016 stats were 49 touches with 254 yards – 167 yards receiving, averaging 5.2 yards per carry on 10 receptions to go along with 6 touchdowns. He has won the 2016 Offensive Player of the Year, 2015 MVP, 2014 Wildcats Offensive MVP, and the 2012 Wildcats Leadership Award.

It’s no wonder he trusts in his own footsteps, as it seems they have not faltered yet.

Stefan mentions his most memorable football memory to date was when they went to Provincial finals in 2015. Although they did not come away with the win, it was still one of his “favourite experiences”. He says, “The rush I get when I make a good play.  The guys I get to add to part of my family and that I would fight and die beside.”

He will get plenty of chances to ‘make a good play’ when he gets to the CFCFPC which he says he wants to gain more experience and to learn and grow as a football player.

In addition to the tryouts, he also will be running and going to the gym often. He also plays high school rugby and rep level hockey. But it’s not all fun and games as he also works at a summer job that is physically demanding. “During the summer I work a labour intensive job hand digging trenches for an irrigation company,” he says.

And while he internally motivates himself, the CFC100 list dangles out in front of him and he states, “I would be honoured to be on the list.”

Until then, Stefan is going to keep to the beat of his own drum and work hard to accomplish all he has set out to do.
