Jaden Dowling started playing football with the atom Roughriders in the Hamilton Minor Football Association (HMFA) because he loved the sport and wanted to excel. During his two years with the Roughriders, he experienced losing a city final game and winning a championship. The following year, two of his coaches moved up to rep and asked him to tryout.

“Coach Miscione and Coach Raposo has a lot of high level playing experience and they taught me a great deal and exposed me to a variety of positions including safety, corner and place kicker over the next four years of Jr. Ti-Cat football,” said Jaden.

The Ti-Cat then used what he learned to make his high school team, the Bishop Tonnos Titans of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association (HWCAA), where he was got a lot of playing time on defence, as a kicker and as a tight end. In this second year of junior football with the Titans, he has expanded his knowledge and learned more from Coaches McPhee, Marini and Morgan about the importance of being a mentor, as he took on a leadership role on the field to assist with running the defense.

Dowling has also really enjoyed his experience the past three years with the west Fox 40 Prospect (formally OPC) team. “I have learned a lot from the different coaches and how to adapt to different styles,” explained the linebacker. “My goals for the [Fox 40 Prospect Challenge] have been the same each year that I have tried out,” added Jaden. “I want to become a better player and learn from new coaches to become a more rounded player.”

He says the challenge of playing at a high level among some of the most talented players has really enhanced his game both physically and mentally.

“I have evolved as a player each year of the [FPC] and hope to have the opportunity to gain more experience this upcoming year,” continued the Titan.

During the offseason, Jaden plays a number of different sports for the school, such as basketball, badminton and touch football. The senior coach also runs an after school weight training program that he attends whenever he is not at other practices. In the spring and summer, he plays rep box lacrosse, which he has been playing for 10 years, and he will also be completing his National Lifeguard Certification this summer.

As a big fan of football at all levels, he does not really follow one player or position, making his coaches his role models.

“… Not only [have they] taught me how to pay the game, but also to respect the game, teammates, opponents, coaches and officials,” commented the Titan. “I love the team aspect of the sport,” he says. “The camaraderie of the sport is different from other sports that I play.”

“I [also] love the physical side of the sport, but also the intellectual part of reading the offence and reacting to what they are doing.”
