Fox 40 Prospect Challenge (Central): DB Thompson looking to improve and showcase his skills

Elvin Thompson Akese’s football career started in Grade 9, when a friend convinced him to try out for their school team, the Cardinal Ambrozic Riverhawks of the Region of Peel Secondary School Athletic Association (ROPSSAA) for fun.

As someone who always had the mentality to stop people, he decided to play on the defensive side of the ball.

In that first season, Elvin was introduced to all three positions in the secondary and found success in each, but enjoyed cornerback and free safety the most.

During his second year of football, he joined the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) with the Brampton Bulldogs as a cornerback.

“[This] is the year where I had the biggest jump in skill and improvement and taught me how hard I needed to work and what football is really about,” said Elvin.

After gaining confidence and experience, he tried out for Team Ontario, where he made it to the Top 90 Red, Black camp, which made him even hungrier to get better as a player.

“Going into my junior year at Cardinal Ambrozic, while being a part of an elite defence, I [was] able to lead our secondary in interceptions as we went on to the ROPSSAA T2 finals, but we were defeated in a defensive battle,” explained the Riverhawk.

His goals for the Fox 40 Prospect Challenge are not only to help his region, Halton-Peel, win, but to also help himself improve and get better while showcasing his abilities in what he can produce in the secondary.

Moreover, Elvin’s offseason is spent in the gym, working on his speed with a parachute and footwork with his ladder.

He also runs track and field to help improve his speed and to help with his overall athletic ability.

On the field, his role model is Earl Thomas of the Seattle Seahawks because he is currently seen as one of the best free safeties in the game, but Thomas is only 5’9 and about 200lbs, which is considered undersized, yet he doesn’t let it prevent his game.

“He reminds [me] that size doesn’t matter,” added Elvin.

Elvin loves playing football because it is like an escape from reality to him, where he is allowed to do things that wouldn’t be considerable in other sports or normal.

“Also I love football because this game is challenge, not only in the physical aspect, but the mental part too, which will tests one’s limits,” commented the defensive back, “and really lets you see what one’s made off.”
