Fox 40 Prospect Challenge (Central): Erik Johnson is a freakish athlete

Erik Johnson may just be a sophomore, but he has already an impressive resume that compares favorably to most seniors. The young man is an athlete capable of breaking any game open by catching, running, or returning kicks or punts.

He has played football for seven years and has accumulated a list of individual and team awards far too long to go in details about, but here are a few highlights; 2015 Jr. Metro Bowl Champions, four time CISAA JV football champion, 2015 Athlete of the Year at St-Michael’s Kerry Blues, 2014 Jr. Argos Offensive Player of the Year, three time OPC Player on Central Team… and this just some of the many highlights on his resume, which includes track and field, and baseball as well.

In the off-season, Johnson trains with his teammates as well as competing in other sports. “In the off-season, I train with my teammates, as well as run track at school and with my club team, and play AAA baseball. I think it is important to play more than one sport to develop other skills that make you a complete athlete,” says Johnson.

Despite his young age, Johnson is mature beyond his years. He does not see football as a sport, but rather as a means to learn life lessons. “Football has been a great experience for me throughout my life because it has taught me important life lessons such as responsibility, accountability, and leadership,” says Johnson.

Johnson is following in the footsteps of his idol, Bo Jackson. “He was also a multi-sport athlete who competed professionally in two sports due to his great athleticism and desire to be the best,” says Johnson.

Football is the ultimate team sport because every one has to do their job in order for the team to win. It is a sport, where one individual can shine, but cannot win. Johnson understands that, and for that reason loves the game even more. “I love to play football because it is the greatest example of a team sport, and if everyone on the field does their job great things can happen. Everyone has to be successful individually for us to be successful collectively,” says Johnson.

During his time at the CFCFPC, Johnson wants to practice and gain exposure for the future. “My goal for CFCFPC is to get additional reps with the best players in Ontario, and the exposure I need in order to make it to the next level,” says Johnson.
