Fox 40 Prospect Challenge (Central): Kyle Holloway, toughest competitor

Kyle Holloway is a coach’s dream. A young quarterback that plays in the pocket, plays through pain and injuries, and a will to win only matched by the chip on his shoulders.

Holloway discovered football while playing on the Oshawa Hawkeyes Bantam team, but did not really get into it until high school. “Years later, going into my first year of high school, I decided I wanted to really focus on football and, accordingly, fought to go to King City Secondary,” says Holloway, “I found out quickly that it was going to be a lot harder to be a piece of King City’s outstanding football program than I thought.”

But rather than folding beneath the competition, Holloway rose to the occasion. Holloway spent three years as a backup receiver, but never wavered from his goal, which was to be the starting quarterback. “In fact, I doubled my efforts, attending several skills improvement camps offered by Super Elite Football, gaining mentorship from CFL athletes and legendary QB coach Bob Rainford,” says Holloway.

With his never say die attitude, Holloway won the starting gig, and led his program to an even season.

Holloway prided himself in playing quarterback from inside the pocket, but this off-season he is training to improve his speed to become more of a dual threat in the King City read-option spread offense. “This off-season I’ve really been focusing on improving my speed,” says Holloway.

Holloway admires former Packer quarterback Brett Favre for two reasons, his love for the game, and his toughness, both of which are attributes that define Holloway as a player.

“His ‘never say die’, ‘I’m going to play football until I have to crawl off the field’ attitude is something that, I believe, we share. It was what willed me into playing games this season in spite of a strained LCL, pulled back muscle, and various other injuries. In my mind, it didn’t matter what happened I was going to play because my team needed me, I wanted to play, and because that’s what Brett Favre would have done,” says Holloway.

The CFCFPC is another opportunity for Holloway to show his competitiveness, his skillset, and to, simply, football. “I want to squeeze out every chance to play that I possibly can,” says Holloway, “The chance to participate in an Ontario-wide all-star game sounds like a fantastic opportunity.”

The competitor in Holloway sees it as an opportunity to find out whom is the best quarterback and player in the nation. “The CFC 100 list is a representation of the best prospects that Canada has to offer. The way I see it, what is the point of doing anything if you’re not striving to be the best?”
