Carmine Spedaliere has been playing football since he was 10 years old, getting his start in Niagara Regional Minor Football. He played one year of bantam for the Storm, where he was named captained for the season. The past three years he has been with the Niagara Spears in the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL), where he will continue to play next year as well.

In his second junior varsity season, his peers named Carmine captain and the team finished the season playing in the 2015 Provincial Championship. That year, he was also on the Fox 40 Prospect Challenge (formally OPC) west junior varsity team. The linebacker also plays in the Niagara Region High School Athletic Association (NRHSAA) with the St. Francis Phoenix, where he has been since 2013.

He has had the honour of being captain each year and has been the high school recipient each year for the Junior Varsity and Varsity Football Recognition Award. In his Grade 10 year, he was the recipient of the Kristen French Scholarship award, which is given to one male and one female student with academic honour, community and school involvement and leadership qualities.

ā€œI take great pride in my academic achievements and have carried a 95% average each year in secondary school,ā€ said Carmine. The Phoenix recently made the Team Ontario U18 roster to play in Arlington, Texas next month, and he was also named to the 2016 NCAA All Conference Team.

His goal for this yearā€™s FPC is to represent the West Varsity team in 2017 Prospect game. ā€œI train all season at the gym weight lifting,ā€ explained the linebacker. ā€œI also work on agility and strength at home with equipment I have purchased, such as an agility ladder, weigh bag and tire.ā€ The Phoenix also does specific drills and maintains a healthy diet.

On the field, he looks up to Ray Lewis for his talent as a linebacker, but the first person he thinks of is his father, who played high school football. ā€œI have always had a passion to play the game of football,ā€ commented Carmine. ā€œThe adrenaline of the game is intense, and being part of a team where so many players contribute to the win or lose outcome.ā€

ā€œIt is a great growing experience.ā€
