Fox 40 Prospect Challenge (Central): Richard Cole is at home on the field

“The field is a place I like to call home,” says Richard Cole, “I started playing football in the eighth grade.”

Cole is a 5’10, 170lbs athlete playing the positions of receivers with the ability to lineup both in the slot and outside the numbers, as well as defensive back.

He is a physical player reminiscing of future NFL Hall of Famer Steve Smith, a short but physical wide receiver that played for the Carolina Panthers and Baltimore Ravens. “I love playing football because it gives me a chance to use all my energy, along with my physicality,” says Cole.

This past season, Cole suited up for his high school team, the King City Lions. He recorded 430 all-purpose yards along with five touchdowns as a receiver. Cole also played defensive back in the Ontario Varsity Football League where he recorded 56 tackles including 32 assisted tackles and one interception, which he returned for 35 yards.

His offseason training regimen is spent in the gym and on the footwork ladder. “I’m on my foot work ladder for about one hour and 30 minutes,” says Cole who adds, “I also practices my route running because if you can’t get open, you can’t make plays.”

At the CFCFPC, Cole is looking to impress all the coaches present, but most importantly, he wants to impress the people, coaches, and programs that doubted him. “My goals for the CFCFPC are to showcase my talents to the coaches and programs that overlooked me, or didn’t think I was good enough,” says Cole.

Perhaps the best football attribute of this young man is that he understands how to play the position of receiver much better than his age would have you think. Most people think receiver is about being taller, faster, and stronger than your counterpart, but Cole understands that if one can’t run routes and one doesn’t have the proper footwork then one will not have much success as a receiver, which is why Julio Jones is Cole’s role model.

“Julio Jones is role model because for a guy with size he is quick and agile, has incredible footwork, and amazing route running,” says Cole.
