Fox 40 Prospect Challenge (Central): Riley Buchanan like father, like son

Hard work beats talent when talent does not work hard.

This saying defines the football career of Riley Buchanan.

ā€œIā€™ve never been the biggest or fastest guy on the field,ā€ says Buchanan, ā€œbut I never give up.ā€ The hardest workers in sports are rewarded with team and individual accolades, which Buchanan knows all to well.

The young linebacker has been a force to reckon with on all the teams he has played for. From Defensive Player of the Week (OVFL), to Most Improved Player (Oshawa Hawkeyes, and Donald A Wilson), to Defensive Player of the Year (Oshawa Hawkeyes, and Donald A Wilson), Buchanan has had a pristine career thus far as a middle and outside linebacker terrorizing opposing offenses in Ontario.

Despite his stellar career, Buchanan is not done yet, he wants to keep challenging himself and learn more. He wants ā€œto learn from new and different coaches, [ā€¦] and loves the strategies in football, the physicality of it, and the discipline required to play the game,ā€ says Buchanan, but adds that he enjoys the camaraderie of the sport.

The scariest part of Buchananā€™s game is the time spent in the gym during the offseason. He has been following a crossfit program at Crossfit Dioxide, a gym, in Whitby, Ontario for two years, now. Last year, he took it up a notch and competed in his first Crossfit Open and finished 17th overall in the province.

This young manā€™s football idol is none other than his father, Terry Buchanan. ā€œMy dad played in the CIS for five years with the Saint Maryā€™s Huskies, and made it to the Vanier Cup in his freshman year,ā€ says Buchanan.

Only the future knows what will happen to Riley Buchanan, but like father like son?
