Fox 40 Prospect Challenge (West Coast): Carteri looking to prove his doubters wrong

Runningback and free safety Mateo Carteri has a lot of childhood memories of playing football with his friends and family. He says that he’s made many close friends through the sport and that he’s “grateful for it”.

Having played nine years now, the St. Thomas More Knight has a few accolades under his belt. He won the DVP in 2011, the Coaches Award in 2013, was a provincial champion in 2013, and won the Most Inspirational award in 2015.

While he may not be have the size of some players, at 5’9 and 165-pounds, Carteri doesn’t let that bother him as he has role models that fit his same stature.

My football role model is Steve Smith Sr. because he was always told that he wasn’t big enough and that he won’t make it but instead of listening to everyone else he focused on himself and he trained as hard as he and he proved all the doubters wrong and I’m looking to prove all the doubters wrong as well.”

This propels him to have high expectations for himself and, thus, sets his goals accordingly. For the CFCFPC he wants to be able to showcase his football abilities and talents and to get ranked. He also adds that getting on to the CFC100 is also a goal of his, being his graduating year coming up.

In order to accomplish this, Mateo will be working hard to improve that athletic and football ability in the off-season. “I would stay active by playing other sports like wrestling and track,” he says. “As well as weightlifting with my coaches and trainers.”

Carteri loves every aspect of being a football player and finishes by saying, “I love all of the emotions that comes with the game, from the pre game nerves to the excitement of a big play to the post game joy. I love it all.”
