Fox 40 Prospect Challenge (West Coast): First years were “challenging”, not anymore says DB Thomas

Everyone has to start somewhere. For defensive back, Kai Thomas, he says his first year’s playing football were “challenging”. With no playing experience because he started later then many of the other players, he struggled. However, by his second year playing that all changed.

“By my second year of Jr. Bantam, all of the camps, practices, and fitness training helped me develop and have a breakout season – scoring 9 touchdowns. In Grade 9,Ā I started playing high school football and started the season as a backup,” he says. “By mid-season, after showing my coaches what I was capable of in practice,Ā I became a starter. This led to the biggest highlight of my playing career, a 95-yard interception return to score the game winning touchdown in our firstĀ round of playoff games.”

Thomas fashions his game after Ezekiel Elliot of the Dallas Cowboys. He says, “My favorite player is EzekielĀ Elliot of the Dallas Cowboys because of his big-play ability and quick running style that I compare to my own.”

This next season, Thomas will be playing defensive back for the Langley Saints JV team. In his five years of playing, his experience playing the game as been a positive one. He attributes the game to teaching him dedication, discipline, and how hard work pays off.

I also enjoy feeling like part of a team and the connection you make with your teammates and friendships you build,” he says.

He goes on to mention that his high school coach, defensive coordinator, Coach Piche, is someone he looks up to.

My football role model is my defensive co-ordinator at LSS, Coach Piche, because he is demanding and pushes all his players to improveĀ because he wants them to maximize their potential on and off the field, and to grow up to be the best they can be.”

Thomas takes this to heart as he trains in the off-season to improve on the skills that he has already been working hard to develop. “I spend my off-seasons attending football camps, lift weights 3-5 days a week as well as conditioning training,” he says.Ā He also will be looking to improve as a defensive back at the CFCFPC.

This 2016 Langley Minor Offensive Player of the Year, finishes off by mentioning why he love this game so much.

I love to play football because of the intensity and competitiveness and that it is the ultimate team sport.”
