Fox 40 Prospect Challenge (West Coast): LB Mooney grew to love football

Most people assume that when you play a sport, you love it from the start. This was not the case for linebacker, James Mooney.

“I started playing football in Grade 5. My first two seasons, I wasn’t really comfortable on the field and wasn’t sure what position fit me best,” he said. “I continued to play GSL through Grades 7 and 8 and those were the years I really started loving the game.”

He goes on to say that in the winter of Grade 8, he played for Team BC and have since participated in one other trip with that team to Saskatchewan. He was awarded Team MVP for the GSL and Best Linebacker at a UBC camp.

Playing for 6 seasons, Mooney suits up for the Handsworth Royals. He is looking to improve his football skill and ability and is excited for the CFCFPC. “My goal with the CFCFPC is to make the final cut and showcase my abilities in the final game,” said Mooney.

Playing with passion and focus is something that Mooney appreciates. He is inspired by Ray Lewis with these traits. “My football idol is Ray Lewis because he played the sport with such passion and played with such focus and aggression.”

And like Ray Lewis, training and focus is extremely important in order to improve and develop as a young player. During the off-season, Mooney will be spending a lot of time at the gym working on his strength, as well as on the field working on footwork, agility, and speed.

While he didn’t start off loving football, Mooney is now hooked.

I love the sport of football for the fast pace and physical aspect of the game, but also the sense of family.”
